Max Dowman delivered an “exceptional” performance in Arsenal’s 2-1 FA Cup victory over Mansfield, earning glowing praise from Mikel Arteta after his first start in over three months.

The 16-year-old midfielder was making his return to the first team after suffering an ankle injury that sidelined him since October. Despite the lengthy layoff, Dowman looked sharp from the opening whistle and quickly established himself as Arsenal’s standout performer in the first half.

Statistical Dominance

Dowman led Arsenal’s statistics for duels won, dribbles attempted and touches in the opposition box during the opening 45 minutes. His performance was made even more impressive by the challenging playing surface at Field Mill, which left many experienced players struggling for balance and control.

The teenager came close to marking his return with a goal early in the second period, showcasing wonderful footwork to skip past multiple challenges before forcing a save from the Mansfield goalkeeper.

Manager’s Verdict

Arteta was particularly impressed with how Dowman handled the physical demands and tactical complexities of his first start alongside fellow 16-year-old Marli Salmon.

“Very proud of him, very proud as well of Marli. Obviously, two 16-year-olds starting in the FA Cup. That tells us a lot about them, their personality and the quality that they have. And Max, I think he was exceptional,” Arteta told the Evening Standard.

The Arsenal manager was particularly struck by Dowman’s composure under pressure, highlighting his ability to find time and space despite the difficult conditions.

“When the ball is bouncing all over the place and you have people in your back, the way he handles time and space and the touches that he takes, it’s just incredible. Especially at the speed that he delivers those actions. But that tells you the talent that we have.”

Tactical Challenges

Arsenal started the match with an unusual back-three formation, with Christian Norgaard sitting in front of the defence. However, Arteta was forced to abandon the system before half-time following Leandro Trossard’s injury.

The manager revealed the experimental setup was necessity rather than choice, admitting the team had only practiced the formation “once, ten minutes” due to squad limitations and the need to manage player workloads.

Dowman’s impressive display has strengthened his case for increased involvement across all competitions as Arsenal continue their pursuit of silverware on multiple fronts this season.
