Spanish midfielder Mikel Merino is pushing for his first full start for Arsenal, as manager Mikel Arteta looks to strengthen his side for an important run of fixtures.

Since joining the Gunners from Real Sociedad in August for over £30 million, Merino has shown glimpses of his quality and is now ready to make a bigger impact after recovering from an early injury setback.

Arsenal’s Injury Woes and Merino’s Return

This season, Arsenal have been plagued by injuries, which has left Arteta’s squad in a precarious position.

Martin Odegaard sustained an ankle injury while playing for Norway last month, and both Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli recently suffered muscle issues while away on international duty.

Given the team’s injury problems, it would have been understandable if Arteta had been reluctant to see more of his players depart for international fixtures.

However, when it comes to Merino, the Arsenal boss will have been pleased to see the midfielder join up with Spain during the recent international break.

Merino has endured a tough start to his time at Arsenal, having injured his shoulder in his very first training session.

This setback delayed his debut, and he only made his first appearance for the Gunners at the beginning of October.

Since then, Merino has come off the bench twice for Arsenal, but it was his time with the Spain national team that allowed him to regain match fitness.

He played 28 minutes in Spain’s 1-0 victory over Denmark and then started in a 3-0 win against Serbia, where he completed over an hour on the pitch.

These valuable minutes have set Merino up for a potential full debut when Arsenal travel to Bournemouth this weekend.

Arteta’s High Praise for Merino’s Potential

Mikel Arteta has already seen enough from Merino to be excited about what the 28-year-old midfielder can offer to Arsenal in the long term.

Arteta is eager to see Merino in action more regularly and has highlighted the Spaniard’s intelligence and physicality as key attributes that will benefit the team.

“He is going to bring an unbelievable football brain,” Arteta said of Merino.

“He is so intelligent, the way he decides, he occupies spaces, he makes decisions and it is very rare to see that. He is a really talented player in every phase – defending and attacking.”

Merino’s physical presence has already been evident, despite his limited appearances for the club so far.

Standing at 6ft 2in, Merino adds height and strength to Arsenal’s midfield, something that has been missing with the absence of players like Odegaard.

His tenacity was on full display in his debut against Paris Saint-Germain, where despite only playing 26 minutes, he was second only to Riccardo Calafiori in tackles won.

A Big Threat in the Box

In addition to his defensive qualities, Arteta is keen for Merino to show off his attacking prowess, which he has already demonstrated at the international level. A

t Euro 2024, Merino scored the winning goal for Spain in their quarter-final victory over Germany, showcasing his ability to be a decisive force in the opposition’s penalty area.

Although Arsenal fans have yet to see this side of Merino’s game, Arteta believes it’s only a matter of time before he makes an impact in the final third.

“[He will bring] physicality, for sure, and then he is a big threat. The moment he is in the opponent’s box, you see that he is a big, big threat,” Arteta added.

As Arsenal prepare for their upcoming fixtures, the addition of Merino’s football intelligence, strength, and attacking threat will be crucial.

With the team facing challenges due to injuries, Merino’s return to full fitness couldn’t have come at a better time for the Gunners as they aim to stay competitive across all competitions.
