Martin Odegaard appeared to suffer a knee injury during Arsenal’s 1-0 Champions League quarter-final victory over Sporting CP, raising concerns about the captain’s availability for upcoming fixtures.

The Norway international went down requiring medical treatment shortly before being substituted for Kai Havertz, who scored the decisive goal at the José Alvalade Stadium on Tuesday night. While Odegaard didn’t appear to be in significant discomfort when leaving the pitch, the incident has sparked concern among observers.

Former Eliteserien defender Jesper Mathisen, speaking on Norwegian television channel TV2, expressed alarm at the moment Odegaard went down. “Those are scary images. Like watching a horror movie,” Mathisen said. “A nightmare. He’s not sitting down for no reason. It would have been a big loss for both Arsenal and Norway if he had to go out with an injury again.”

However, there were positive signs immediately after the match. Odegaard was spotted moving freely during the post-match celebrations, joining his teammates without any visible discomfort. The 27-year-old playmaker appeared to have shaken off the knock, though the full extent of any potential injury remains unclear.

Arteta to provide update

Mikel Arteta is expected to address Odegaard’s fitness when he faces the media on Friday ahead of Saturday’s Premier League clash against Bournemouth at the Emirates Stadium. The Arsenal manager will be hoping his captain is available for what represents a crucial fixture in the title race.

Speaking after the victory in Lisbon, Arteta praised his team’s performance in what he described as a “big night” and “big moment in the season.” The Spanish coach highlighted the character his side showed after recent disappointments.

“I think we had a point to prove,” Arteta explained. “Yesterday I talked about identity and the things that I wanted to see on that pitch. It certainly happened. Certainly, there was a shift there.”

Havertz delivers when needed

The substitution that saw Odegaard replaced ultimately proved decisive, with Havertz scoring the winner to give Arsenal a crucial advantage ahead of the second leg. Arteta praised the German’s readiness and impact off the bench.

“He’s lived it, he’s been part of something and that’s a really important thing to have in and around the team,” Arteta said of Havertz. “Today he was ready, I could see from the disappointment the other day that he wanted to play immediately.”

The victory puts Arsenal in a strong position heading into the second leg, though Arteta will be monitoring Odegaard’s condition closely as the Gunners continue their pursuit of silverware on multiple fronts.
