According to reports, Arsenal made efforts to match Marinakis’ attractive offer, which reportedly would have tripled Edu’s salary.
However, the Brazilian ultimately chose the opportunity to work within an international multi-club structure, seeing it as an exciting new challenge.
In a statement released on Monday, Edu expressed his gratitude for his time at Arsenal, saying, “This was an incredibly hard decision to make. Arsenal has given me the opportunity to work with so many amazing people and the chance to be a part of something so special in the club’s history.”
He went on to share his fondness for the club, adding, “Arsenal will always remain in my heart. I wish the club and its supporters only good things and all the very best.”
Edu’s departure comes at a time when Arsenal are experiencing a period of resurgence under manager Mikel Arteta, with Edu’s efforts credited as instrumental in shaping the current squad.
A New Chapter in Multi-Club Ownership
Edu’s new role with Marinakis’ ownership group is expected to involve significant influence within the organisation’s clubs.
According to reports, his first major task will be to explore expanding the group’s reach into Brazilian football.
Brazilian journalist Jorge Nicola has reported that Marinakis is interested in acquiring Vasco da Gama as a potential addition, with Edu seen as the ideal candidate to oversee this expansion into Brazil’s football market.
Marinakis, a prominent Greek shipping magnate, is reportedly keen on strengthening his network of clubs, with Vasco da Gama believed to be the leading candidate.
Edu’s appointment suggests that he will be instrumental in identifying and structuring such acquisitions, leveraging his extensive knowledge of both European and Brazilian football markets.
If successful, Edu’s first task in his new role could add another prominent South American club to Marinakis’ stable.
Edu’s Legacy at Arsenal
Edu’s influence at Arsenal will be remembered for his strategic decisions that helped to shape the club’s current identity.
Appointed as Arsenal’s first-ever technical director in 2019, Edu played a key role in assembling a squad that now features young talents and established stars working under Arteta’s guidance.
His impact was not limited to player recruitment; he also made significant contributions to the club’s cultural direction, emphasising values that resonated with Arsenal’s longstanding identity.
His departure marks the end of an era for Arsenal and raises questions about how the club will maintain its momentum without the man who was so pivotal in its transformation.
With Arteta still at the helm, Arsenal will seek to build upon Edu’s legacy, even as they prepare for a new chapter with a yet-to-be-named replacement.
