Arsenal hold a commanding nine-point lead at the Premier League summit with seven games remaining, but history suggests the Gunners’ title hopes could unravel in the coming weeks.

According to BBC Sport analysis, April has proven to be Manchester City’s strongest month under Pep Guardiola and Arsenal’s weakest under Mikel Arteta during their respective tenures.

The statistics make for sobering reading for Arsenal supporters. City have won an incredible 30 of 38 Premier League matches in April under Guardiola, drawing five and losing just three. Even more remarkably, they have won 19 and drawn just two of their past 21 April fixtures since a 2-1 home defeat to Leeds in 2021.

Arsenal’s April record tells a different story entirely. The Gunners have lost seven Premier League games in the month under Arteta, including five defeats in 2021 and 2022 alone. While their recent April form has improved with just two losses in their past 18 games, both defeats proved costly to title challenges.

The 4-1 loss at City in April 2023 and last year’s 2-0 home defeat to Aston Villa significantly damaged Arsenal’s championship aspirations in consecutive seasons.

City’s dominance in April extends beyond just results. Guardiola’s side have scored 102 goals across those 38 games at a rate of 2.7 per match, finding the net two or more times in all but one of their past 21 April fixtures.

The title race could be decided when the sides meet at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday, 19 April. City, who have a game in hand, can close the gap to six points with victory in what promises to be a pivotal encounter.

Before that showdown, Arsenal host Bournemouth in Saturday’s early kick-off, while City face a potentially tricky trip to sixth-placed Chelsea on Sunday. The pressure will be on Arsenal to extend their advantage before City have the chance to respond.

Arteta acknowledged the significance of the upcoming fixtures, telling his players and supporters to prepare for what he described as “a big day” against Bournemouth.

With Arsenal seeking their first league title since 2004 and City chasing a record-extending success, the contrasting April records of both sides add an intriguing subplot to the championship race. Arsenal’s remaining fixtures include home games against Bournemouth and Newcastle, while City must navigate visits to Chelsea and face Villa at home on the final day.

The historical data suggests that if Arsenal are to end their 20-year title drought, they must overcome their April struggles when the pressure reaches its peak.
