Arsenal are preparing for a crucial summer transfer window with sporting director Andrea Berta leading the charge to upgrade the club’s attacking options, particularly on the left wing.

Despite holding a commanding nine-point lead at the top of the Premier League with seven games remaining, the Gunners are already planning significant reinforcements to avoid the mistakes of 2004, when minimal investment after title success led to a decline in competitiveness.

The club’s defensive and midfield units are considered world-class, with players capable of walking into any elite European squad. However, the same cannot be said for the attacking department, where only Bukayo Saka is viewed as truly elite level.

Elite competition comparison reveals gap

A comparison with Champions League semi-final contenders highlights the issue. Barcelona boast Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha and Lamine Yamal, while PSG deploy Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembele alongside Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Desire Doue. Bayern Munich’s frontline features Harry Kane, Luis Diaz and Michael Olise.

Arsenal’s current options of Leandro Trossard, Gabriel Martinelli, Kai Havertz, Viktor Gyokeres and Noni Madueke are described as “very good players” but not yet in the same bracket as their European rivals. The club will reportedly be open to offers for both Martinelli and Trossard this summer.

The numbers illustrate the gap clearly. While Harry Kane has contributed 48 goals and five assists in 40 games, and Luis Diaz has 40 goal contributions this season, Arsenal’s forwards have yet to reach such heights consistently.

Transfer targets under consideration

Several names have emerged as potential solutions. According to Football London, Arsenal were interested in Antoine Semenyo during January but lacked the financial flexibility to compete with Manchester City, who secured the former Bournemouth winger.

Anthony Gordon remains under discussion, having registered 17 goals and five assists this season, though only six goals have come in 25 Premier League appearances. Juventus’s Kenan Yildiz presents another option, but the 20-year-old Turkish international has been more effective centrally than on the left wing.

RB Leipzig’s Yan Diomande has drawn interest from multiple European clubs including Arsenal. The 19-year-old has impressed with 11 goals and eight assists in 29 games, offering pace, close control and two-footed ability. However, sources indicate the player remains content at Leipzig having only joined from Leganes last summer.

Berta will spearhead Arsenal’s summer strategy alongside manager Mikel Arteta and new recruit Maurizio Micheli, who has joined the club’s recruitment team in a senior position. The mission is clear: find elite-level attacking reinforcements to match the quality already present in defense and midfield.
