Arsenal have been handed a boost in the Premier League title race after Newcastle United confirmed that defender Sven Botman has undergone surgery following a head injury.
The Dutch defender was substituted in the first half of Newcastle’s 2-1 defeat to Sunderland on Sunday after suffering a concussion and facial fracture during the Tyne-Wear derby.

Newcastle have now released an official statement confirming the extent of Botman’s injury. “Newcastle United defender Sven Botman has undergone successful surgery on a facial fracture,” the club announced.
“Following concussion protocol, the Dutchman was substituted after suffering the injury during the second half of Sunday’s game against Sunderland at St. James’ Park.”
The statement added that while Botman “is not expected to be sidelined for an extended period,” he “hopes to be available again during the closing weeks of the season.”
Impact on Arsenal fixture
The injury comes at a crucial time for Newcastle, who are scheduled to face Arsenal on April 25 as the title race enters its final weeks. The Gunners currently sit nine points clear at the top of the Premier League table, though they have played one game more than Manchester City.
Botman’s absence would be a significant blow for Eddie Howe’s side, as the defender has been a key figure in Newcastle’s backline when fit this season. The Magpies were already dealing with an injury crisis, having been without Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali, Lewis Miley, Fabian Schar and Emil Krafth for the Sunderland defeat.
While Newcastle expect to welcome back some players in the coming weeks, Botman’s surgery suggests he will likely miss the crucial clash against Arsenal at the end of April.
Contrasting schedules
Arsenal’s schedule leading up to the Newcastle fixture is considerably more demanding than their opponents’. Mikel Arteta’s side face fixtures across three competitions next month, starting with an FA Cup semi-final clash against Southampton on April 4.
The Gunners will then take on Sporting Lisbon in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final before returning to Premier League action at home to Bournemouth on April 11.
Newcastle, by comparison, have a lighter fixture list with Premier League matches against Crystal Palace and Bournemouth after the international break before hosting Arsenal.
The potential absence of Botman could prove significant for Arsenal’s title ambitions, as any dropped points for their opponents in the run-in could help secure what would be the club’s first Premier League title since 2004.
