Arsenal are reportedly in advanced discussions to appoint a new sporting director following Edu Gaspar’s departure last month.

The search for his replacement comes as the Gunners look to maintain their upward trajectory under Mikel Arteta, both on and off the pitch.

Edu’s Departure Leaves a Void

Edu, who played a pivotal role in rebuilding Arsenal into Premier League title contenders, stepped down as sporting director to pursue a new challenge.

The Brazilian had been instrumental in key recruitment decisions, helping assemble a squad capable of competing at the highest level.

In his farewell statement, Edu reflected on his time at Arsenal, saying:

“This was an incredibly hard decision to make. Arsenal has given me the opportunity to work with so many amazing people and the chance to be a part of something so special in the club’s history. It has been a special journey.”

With Edu’s departure, Arsenal are keen to fill the role swiftly, ensuring continuity in their recruitment strategy and overall club operations.

Roberto Olabe Linked to the Role

One of the leading candidates for the vacant position is Roberto Olabe, who is set to leave his role at Real Sociedad in the summer.

The highly-regarded Spaniard has reportedly entered advanced talks with Arsenal to take over as their sporting director.

Italian football expert Gianluca Di Marzio recently told MyBettingSites:

“It’s already well known that Roberto Olabe will leave Real Sociedad, and I have been told that he is in advanced talks with Arsenal to replace Edu. I think he could start a new era at Arsenal.”

Olabe’s credentials are impressive, having built a reputation for developing talent and overseeing a successful Real Sociedad team.

His potential appointment is viewed as a step forward for Arsenal as they seek to solidify their backroom team.

Eye on January Transfer Window

While the backroom reshuffle is a priority, Arsenal are also preparing for the January transfer window.

Historically, the club avoids major moves in winter due to inflated fees, but with gaps in their squad, there could be changes on the horizon.

The Gunners have already been linked with bringing in a new striker, following a quiet summer window that only saw the addition of Raheem Sterling on deadline day.

Sterling’s performances have been underwhelming so far, with his first Premier League assist coming in the recent 3-0 victory over Nottingham Forest.

Arteta, addressing Sterling’s role, said:

“I would like to see him more, to be fair. This is down to me. He is trying his best, his application, his commitment around the team has been exceptional, and now it is time for me to give him more minutes.”

As Arsenal look ahead, their focus remains twofold: finding Edu’s successor to steer their long-term strategy and addressing immediate squad needs to maintain their push for success this season.
