According to Arseblog, Hein sustained the injury during training last week, dealing a significant blow to both his immediate playing prospects and longer-term career planning.
The setback comes at a particularly challenging time for the goalkeeper, whose Arsenal contract is set to expire this summer. Hein had joined Bremen on loan hoping to build on the 31 appearances he made in La Liga with Real Valladolid last season.
However, the move to Germany has proven difficult from the start. After slipping down the pecking order at Emirates Stadium following Kepa Arrizabalaga’s summer arrival, Hein managed just two appearances for Bremen, with his last outing coming back in October.
Werder Bremen head coach Daniel Thioune expressed his sympathy for the goalkeeper’s situation.
“I feel incredibly sorry for Karl. He’s a top goalkeeper who has fully embraced his role with us and given everything in every single training session,” Thioune said. “We hope the operation and the rehabilitation afterwards go well and that he can get back on the pitch as soon as possible. We’ll support him in every way we can.”
The injury timing could hardly be worse for Hein’s future prospects. With his Arsenal contract expiring in the coming months, the goalkeeper was likely hoping to use his Bremen stint to showcase his abilities to potential suitors.
Instead, he finds himself facing an uncertain summer transfer window while recovering from surgery, with no clear timeline established for his return to action.
Hein’s loan struggles highlight the challenges facing Arsenal’s fringe players in securing regular first-team football elsewhere. Despite his experience in Spain’s top flight, the goalkeeper has found opportunities limited in the Bundesliga.
The injury also leaves Werder Bremen short of goalkeeping options as they continue their domestic campaign. The German side will need to assess their squad depth while Hein focuses on his rehabilitation in London.
Arsenal supporters will hope the young goalkeeper can make a full recovery and eventually find a pathway back to regular competitive football, whether that involves a contract extension at Emirates Stadium or a fresh start elsewhere.
