Mikel Merino is reportedly set to be fit in time for Spain’s World Cup campaign this summer, according to a source close to the midfielder.
The versatile Arsenal player has been sidelined since January when he suffered a bone stress fracture in his foot during the 3-2 Premier League defeat to Manchester United. Despite scoring in that match, Merino was forced to undergo surgery in February and has been out of action ever since.

According to AS, a source close to Merino has confirmed he will be available for La Roja’s World Cup squad in North America. The news comes as a boost for Spain manager Luis de la Fuente, who will have the experienced midfielder at his disposal for the tournament.
Progress evident at Wembley
Merino showed signs of progress when he attended Arsenal’s 2-0 Carabao Cup final defeat to Manchester City at Wembley Stadium on Sunday. The 30-year-old was spotted walking on the pitch before kick-off, accompanied by teammates, though still wearing a protective boot.
Significantly, Merino was using just one crutch rather than the two he had been relying on in recent weeks, suggesting his recovery is progressing well. The midfielder was seen inspecting the pitch alongside young teammate Max Dowman before the final.
Arsenal impact
While the World Cup news is positive for Spain, it remains unclear whether Merino will return in time to contribute to Arsenal’s season finale. The club will not rush his comeback, prioritizing his long-term fitness over short-term gains.
Merino’s absence has been felt by Mikel Arteta’s side, who have missed his versatility and tactical flexibility. The Spanish international can operate as a central midfielder, attacking midfielder, or false-nine, having demonstrated this adaptability throughout his Arsenal career.
Before his injury, Merino had been a key figure for the Gunners, playing 1,877 minutes across all competitions this season while contributing six goals and three assists.
Arsenal are currently dealing with multiple injury concerns, with Martin Odegaard closing in on a return from a knee problem while William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes are managing ankle and knee issues respectively. Jurrien Timber remains absent with an ankle injury, while Leandro Trossard is resting a hip problem picked up during the FA Cup victory at Mansfield.
The club will hope Merino’s recovery continues at its current pace, with his potential World Cup availability suggesting a return to full fitness is within reach.
