Arsenal Settles for Budget Alternative in Striker Search
Arsenal to Sign Jonathan David
Arsenal is on the verge of signing Canadian striker Jonathan David from Lille at a cut-price deal.
David, who has shown excellent form in recent seasons, is in the final year of his contract, prompting Lille to sell him before his contract expires in 2025.
Arsenal has been pursuing several high-profile strikers, but their exorbitant release clauses made them unattainable.
High-Profile Targets Prove Too Expensive
Initially, Arsenal’s top target was Benjamin Sesko, a 6ft5 forward known for his potential and impressive stats, including an average of 2.82 shots per game and 16 goals from a 7.7 xG.
Despite his raw talent, Sesko’s form improved towards the end of the season, making him a sought-after prospect.
However, Arsenal missed out on him, necessitating a shift in their search.
Joshua Zirkzee, a 6ft4 forward with a £35 million release clause, also emerged as an option.
He had a decent season in Serie A, scoring 12 goals and providing six assists in 37 appearances.
However, his style as a link-up player differed from the penalty box prowess Arsenal sought.
Viktor Gyokeres was another consideration. At 26, he was the oldest option and had yet to play in a top-five league.
Despite an impressive season in Portugal with 29 goals and ten assists, his £85 million release clause and the challenge of adapting to the Premier League made him less attractive.
Arsenal Turns Attention to David
Express Sports reports that the Gunners have now turned their attention to David.
With other options proving too costly, Arsenal has shifted focus to Jonathan David.
Valued at around £20 million, David fits within Arsenal’s budget.
However, to fund the move, Arsenal may need to offload players such as Reiss Nelson, Eddie Nketiah, and Emile Smith Rowe.
