Arsenal star refuses autograph request with perfect reason

Arsenal defender Riccardo Calafiori showed exactly why the Gunners are nine points clear at the top of the Premier League with his response to a fan’s autograph request during the international break.
The Italian left-back was approached by a supporter holding what appeared to be a gold image of a Premier League trophy. However, when Calafiori realised what the picture depicted, he immediately pulled away from signing it.

“No, this one no,” the defender said firmly. “We didn’t win yet.”
When the fan persisted and begged him to sign anyway, Calafiori explained his reasoning with a simple but telling response: “No, no, I’m superstitious.”
The exchange, captured on video, perfectly encapsulates the mentality within Arteta’s squad as they close in on what would be their first Premier League title since the 2003-04 Invincibles season.
Title race intensifies pressure
Arsenal currently hold a commanding nine-point advantage over Manchester City with seven games remaining, though their rivals do have a game in hand. The two sides are set to meet at the Etihad Stadium in April in what could prove to be a decisive encounter.
Despite Opta giving Arsenal more than a 97% probability of lifting the trophy in May, recent events have only heightened the tension. The Gunners’ defeat in the Carabao Cup final has added extra scrutiny to how the team handles pressure in the closing stages of the campaign.
Mikel Arteta addressed these concerns head-on after the cup final, pointing to his team’s resilience throughout the season. “We played 50 games, I think, today,” the Spanish manager said. “So every time you have a defeat or a draw, if that’s the consequence, then you’re not prepared to play 70 games because it’s something that will happen at some point.”
Keeping feet on the ground
Calafiori’s refusal to sign the trophy image demonstrates the grounded approach the Arsenal squad is maintaining despite their strong position. The defender’s superstitious nature reflects a team that is taking nothing for granted as they approach the business end of the season.
Arteta has consistently emphasised the importance of his players’ mentality, and their recent history suggests they know how to bounce back from setbacks. “The good thing is that we have a very recent history of how this team has reacted in those moments, and I’m sure that we’re going to do it again,” he explained.
The north London side will need to maintain this focus and determination as they navigate the remaining fixtures, with every point crucial in their quest to end their 20-year wait for Premier League glory.
