David Raya’s path to Saturday’s Champions League final against Paris St-Germain represents one of football’s most remarkable journeys, taking him from National League grounds to European football’s biggest stage.

The Arsenal goalkeeper will become only the third player in history to make the leap from non-league football to a Champions League final, joining Steve Finnan and Chris Smalling in achieving this extraordinary feat.

From Macclesfield to the pinnacle

In September 2014, a teenage Raya was beaten 3-0 at Moss Rose while on loan at Southport from Blackburn Rovers. Playing in front of fewer than 1,500 spectators, few could have imagined the Spaniard would reach European football’s summit just over a decade later.

“I don’t think anybody could have predicted or scripted it,” Paul Carden, Southport’s former assistant manager, told BBC Sport. “You wouldn’t be 100% surprised, but you wouldn’t have put a bet on him.”

Raya’s journey began in Barcelona’s outskirts with Third Division club Cornella before moving to Blackburn at 16 through a partnership between the clubs. Unable to break into the first team behind established keepers, he made the bold decision to drop three leagues to Southport in search of regular football.

Learning in the lower leagues

The loan spell proved crucial for Raya’s development, exposing him to the physicality and pressure of senior football. Despite opposition teams targeting his 6ft frame with high balls and extra aggression, the young Spaniard’s confidence never wavered.

“There was a ball that came back to him, late on in the game, and you’d expect a keeper just to shell it back up the pitch, because he’s getting closed down by one or two forwards, and he’s chopped one of them then just casually passed it out to the full-back,” Carden recalled of Raya’s composure under pressure.

His Southport spell culminated with a memorable FA Cup third-round performance against Derby County, where multiple outstanding saves kept Championship opposition at bay before a stoppage-time penalty decided the tie.

From Blackburn to Arsenal

Returning to Blackburn, Raya established himself as first choice following their relegation to League One in 2017, helping secure immediate promotion back to the Championship. His performances attracted Brentford’s attention in 2019 for £3m, before Arsenal completed a £27m deal in 2024 after a successful loan spell.

The 30-year-old has since become integral to Arsenal’s Premier League triumph and Spain’s Euro 2024 victory. Saturday’s Champions League final against PSG in Budapest represents the pinnacle of a journey that began in non-league anonymity, proving that unconventional paths can lead to football’s greatest stages.
