Arsenal Weigh Up Alternative Signings as Key Deal Stalls

Martín Zubimendi

Negotiations for Zubimendi Reach an Impasse

Arsenal’s pursuit of Real Sociedad midfielder Martín Zubimendi has hit a significant roadblock, forcing the club to reconsider their options in midfield.

The Gunners had been in discussions to secure the Spaniard’s signature since January, hoping to finalise a pre-summer agreement.

However, despite their persistence, they have yet to make a breakthrough.

Zubimendi had previously turned down a move to Liverpool last summer, but Arsenal remained undeterred, with Mikel Arteta keen to bring the 26-year-old to the Emirates.

Reports indicated that the club was prepared to activate his £51 million release clause, with Arteta playing a pivotal role in convincing him to join.

Nonetheless, progress has stalled, and Arsenal are now assessing alternative targets.

The situation is further complicated by the imminent departures of Jorginho and Thomas Partey, whose contracts are set to expire at the end of the season.

With midfield reinforcements a priority, Arsenal’s sporting director Andrea Berta is now exploring other options to strengthen Arteta’s squad.

Berta Considers Hjulmand as a Cheaper Alternative

With negotiations for Zubimendi proving difficult, Berta has reportedly turned his attention to Sporting CP’s Morten Hjulmand.

The Denmark international has been a standout performer in the Primeira Liga and could present a more financially viable option for Arsenal.

While Hjulmand’s contract includes a £67 million release clause, sources suggest that Sporting could be willing to part with their captain for around £34 million—a significant reduction compared to Zubimendi’s valuation.

The 25-year-old has played a crucial role for Ruben Amorim’s side, boasting an impressive 91.1 per cent passing accuracy and contributing two goals and two assists in 20 league starts this season.

Hjulmand’s leadership qualities and ability to dictate play make him a strong candidate to reinforce Arsenal’s midfield.

His contributions last season helped Sporting secure their 20th Primeira Liga title, further underlining his credentials as a high-quality addition.

Crucial Fixtures Ahead for Arsenal

As the transfer discussions continue, Arsenal remain focused on their push for success in the Premier League.

The Gunners face a crucial run of fixtures, starting with a home clash against Chelsea on March 16.

They will then welcome Fulham to the Emirates on April 1 before travelling to Everton on April 5.

Brentford and Ipswich Town also await in what could be a decisive period for their season.

With midfield reinforcements now a priority, it remains to be seen whether Arsenal will reignite their pursuit of Zubimendi or opt for a more pragmatic solution in Hjulmand.

Either way, Berta faces a crucial decision as he looks to shape the squad ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.
