Arsenal Women manager Renee Slegers highlighted the strength of her squad after watching the Gunners demolish West Ham United 5-0 in the WSL on Saturday.

Chloe Kelly starred with a hat-trick, while Alessia Russo and Beth Mead also found the net in a dominant display that showcased the depth and versatility of Slegers’ squad.

Squad rotation pays dividends

The Dutch manager was particularly pleased with how her rotated side performed, with several players operating in unfamiliar roles and new partnerships forming throughout the team.

“We have new partnerships on the pitch, we make changes, players playing different roles on the pitch, having to change roles, players going on, playing in roles that they normally don’t and how that just doesn’t change the way we play,” Slegers told the press.

Academy graduate Sophie Harwood made her debut as a late substitute, playing as a striker despite typically featuring as a fullback or central midfielder in training. The manager praised the teenager’s adaptability and work ethic.

Kelly’s return to form continues

Slegers was effusive in her praise for Kelly, who has now produced back-to-back impressive performances after struggling with injury and form earlier in the season.

“I think if you see Chloe at her very best and I think she’s showing that the last two games, she’s such an important player for us,” the manager explained. “She was away with injury and also at the start of the season, not really being herself and not being physically comfortable, but now she is and she’s in a great place.”

The Arsenal boss also highlighted the impact of her summer signings, including Smilla Holmberg, whose pace and crossing ability from wide areas proved crucial in breaking down West Ham’s defensive structure.

Tactical flexibility on display

Arsenal’s attacking variety was a key theme throughout Slegers’ post-match analysis. The manager emphasized how the team’s unpredictability makes them difficult to defend against.

“The variety of chances that we create and the different ways we go forward, whether that’s through lines, whether that’s wide, central, or direct. I think that’s what we want to be. We want to be unpredictable,” she said.

Beth Mead’s deployment in a central role after coming on as a substitute exemplified this tactical flexibility, with Slegers noting the England international’s intelligence and ability to adapt to different positions.

The comprehensive victory maintains Arsenal Women’s momentum as they continue their WSL campaign, with Slegers’ squad depth proving to be a significant asset as the season progresses.
