Spanish defender Laia Codina will leave Arsenal at the end of the current season when her contract expires, bringing an end to her three-year stay in north London.

According to Arseblog News, the club held an option for a further year in Codina’s contract but has chosen not to trigger it. The 28-year-old is reportedly keen to secure regular playing time ahead of next summer’s World Cup in Brazil.

Codina arrived at Arsenal from Barcelona in 2023, joining the Gunners fresh from winning the World Cup with Spain that summer. Her arrival was seen as a significant coup for the club, adding international pedigree and experience to the defensive ranks.

Trophy success in north London

During her time with Arsenal, Codina made 58 appearances and scored four goals across all competitions. The defender enjoyed considerable success, collecting several major trophies during her tenure.

Most notably, Codina played a crucial role in Arsenal’s 2024 Continental Cup triumph, coming on at half-time in the final against Chelsea to help secure a 1-0 victory. The Spanish international also lifted the Champions League and FIFA Champions Cup with the Gunners.

Her departure represents a significant loss of experience for Arsenal Women, particularly given her international credentials and trophy-winning pedigree at the highest level.

World Cup ambitions driving exit

The decision appears to be mutually beneficial, with Codina prioritizing regular minutes ahead of Spain’s World Cup campaign next summer. Competition for places in Arsenal’s defensive line has intensified in recent seasons, making consistent game time harder to come by.

At 28, Codina likely views the upcoming World Cup as potentially her final opportunity to compete at the tournament’s highest level, making regular club football essential for maintaining her place in the Spanish national team setup.

Arsenal fans can expect further departure announcements in the coming days, with the club anticipated to confirm additional exits ahead of Wednesday’s final home game of the season against Everton. The summer promises to be a period of significant change for the Women’s team as they prepare for the next campaign.

Codina’s departure marks the end of a successful chapter for both player and club, with the defender leaving having achieved considerable success during her time in the red and white of Arsenal.
