Arsenal Women Extend Clean Sheet Run With Comfortable Victory

Arsenal Women maintained their perfect defensive record in 2026 with a commanding 2-0 victory over London City Lionesses at Hayes Lane, closing the gap on European qualification spots in the WSL.
The Gunners have now gone the entire calendar year without conceding a league goal, showcasing the defensive solidity that has underpinned their recent resurgence under Jonas Eidevall.
With several key players away on international duty including Steph Catley, Caitlin Foord, and Kyra Cooney-Cross, Arsenal’s squad depth was tested. Anneke Borbe started in goal, while Lotte Wubben-Moy partnered Leah Williamson in central defence.

Smith Strikes First
London City started brightly and should have taken the lead on 11 minutes when Freya Godfrey fired over from close range after good work down the left flank from Pattinson and Franssi.
Arsenal made them pay four minutes later through Olivia Smith. Chloe Kelly’s driving run to the byline created the opening, her cutback evading several players before falling to Smith, whose left-footed effort took a deflection and looped into the corner.
The Canadian forward continued to threaten throughout the first half, winning a dangerous free kick and seeing another effort blocked after smart play from Mariona Caldentey.
Blackstenius Seals Victory
Arsenal doubled their advantage on 76 minutes through substitute Stina Blackstenius. The goal showcased the team’s improved fluidity, beginning with Katie McCabe’s long ball forward.
Blackstenius held the ball up expertly in midfield before finding Caldentey, who played Alessia Russo into the channel. The England striker’s cutback found Blackstenius perfectly positioned to slot past goalkeeper Lete.
The Swedish striker had replaced Frida Maanum on the hour mark alongside Victoria Pelova, with Russo dropping deeper into a number 10 role to good effect.
Defensive Resilience Continues
Arsenal’s clean sheet never looked seriously threatened despite some second-half pressure from the hosts. Borbe made a crucial save from Franssi, while the defence dealt comfortably with crosses and set pieces.
Late bookings for Kelly, Emily Fox, and Pelova added some niggle to proceedings, but Arsenal saw out the victory professionally to secure their third consecutive league win.
The result moves Arsenal closer to the European qualification places as they continue their push up the WSL table. With their defensive record intact and attacking players finding form, the north London side are building momentum at a crucial stage of the season.
