Slegers credits player mentality
Manager Renee Slegers attributes the defensive solidity to a combination of tactical preparation and player commitment ahead of Arsenal’s upcoming clash with West Ham.
I think the way the analysts and the coaching staff are putting game plans together, how that relates to our game model and identity that we want to play with, it’s been at a very high level. It’s with input from the players. It’s with high buy-in from the players.
The Dutch coach emphasized the importance of maintaining standards, noting that the defensive excellence represents a growing process that began taking shape last season.
They have high motivation to execute their roles because they see the benefits and the rewards. We also know if we don’t keep our standards high and keep on stacking standards then it will slip.
Goalkeeper rotation paying dividends
Arsenal’s goalkeeping department has played a crucial role in the defensive success, with German keeper Anneke Borbe earning praise for her performances since her competitive debut against Liverpool at Emirates Stadium.
The club has strengthened their options between the posts, recalling Naomi Williams from her January loan spell and bringing in Bara Votikova on a temporary deal during the winter window.
Slegers spoke positively about Daphne van Domselaar’s return from a challenging tendon injury that kept the Dutch international sidelined for an extended period.
If you look at Anneke Borbe, how well she’s done since her debut against Liverpool at Emirates Stadium. That was her first competitive game for us and the way she’s been growing and developing in our environment, it’s been fantastic.
With Manuela Zinsberger currently injured, according to Arseblog News, Arsenal now have four goalkeepers competing for the number one spot, creating healthy competition within the squad.
The defensive foundation has provided Arsenal Women with a platform to build upon as they continue their WSL campaign, with Slegers emphasizing the need to maintain the high standards that have made them so difficult to break down.
