Early dominance pays dividends
Renee Slegers’ side made their intentions clear early on, creating numerous chances before breaking the deadlock on 21 minutes. Russo’s deep cross found Stina Blackstenius, whose header attempt saw the ball bounce awkwardly in front of Liverpool goalkeeper Falk before trickling through her legs.
Arsenal doubled their advantage just 11 minutes later through a well-worked move. Katie McCabe’s short corner found Mariona Caldentey, who played a neat one-two before the Spanish midfielder fired past Falk from a tight angle.
The north London side put the result beyond doubt on 37 minutes when Russo capped off an excellent team move. After Caitlin Foord’s pass found Beth Mead wide, the England winger located Victoria Pelova on the overlap, and her cutback was expertly converted by Russo into the far corner.
Emotional farewells mark season’s end
The match carried added significance as several Arsenal stalwarts made their final appearances in the famous red shirt. McCabe captained the side for what proved to be her last game, with Laia Codina, Pelova, and Mead also starting their final matches for the club.
Liverpool managed to pull one back through Shaw on 74 minutes, capitalizing on a scramble in the box following a corner, but Arsenal comfortably saw out the remainder of the contest.
Steph Catley’s introduction in the 90th minute for McCabe provided a poignant moment as the Irish international’s 11-year Arsenal career came to a close.
The victory ensures Arsenal finish as runners-up in the WSL, earning automatic qualification for the Champions League group stage next season. This represents a significant achievement for Slegers’ squad, who have maintained their position among Europe’s elite despite the ongoing squad transitions.
With several key departures confirmed and a summer of potential changes ahead, Arsenal Women head into the off-season with momentum and European football secured for another campaign.
