Arsenal’s defensive lineup faces uncertainty as Jurrien Timber has been omitted from the Netherlands’ provisional squad for their forthcoming Nations League matches.

This decision raises concerns about his availability for the critical Premier League clash against Liverpool this Sunday.

Timber’s Injury Woes

The 23-year-old Timber has not appeared in any fixtures for Arsenal since the international break, leaving fans and management anxious about his recovery.

His exclusion from the Dutch team not only highlights his ongoing fitness issues but also casts doubt on his readiness to participate against Liverpool at the Emirates Stadium.

Before this setback, Timber had established himself as a crucial component of Mikel Arteta’s squad.

Having made a strong start to the season, he appeared to have fully overcome a knee injury that had sidelined him for the entirety of his debut campaign.

His absence would undoubtedly add to Arteta’s selection challenges, particularly as key players like Bukayo Saka and Riccardo Calafiori also battle to regain fitness ahead of the match.

Arteta’s Cautious Optimism

In the lead-up to the Liverpool game, Mikel Arteta was non-committal about Timber’s condition but acknowledged his participation in the team’s training.

“He has had the first session he could have some involvement with,” Arteta stated to the press.

“He has been out for a while. We expected him to be further back than where he is at the moment, but again we have to wait and see.”

The Gunners will need all hands on deck as they prepare to face a formidable Liverpool side, who currently lead the Premier League table and are in excellent form under new manager Arne Slot.

A win for the Reds could create a seven-point gap over Arsenal, making this fixture even more crucial for the home side.

Concerns for Arsenal’s Attack

Arsenal has also felt the absence of Bukayo Saka in their last two outings, which included a disappointing defeat and a narrow victory.

Arteta is acutely aware of the impact Saka’s presence brings to the team, and he offered a glimmer of hope regarding the winger’s fitness.

“He’s done a bit of training on the grass. How far we can get him before Sunday is another question,” he explained, adding that the additional training day could be beneficial.

The team will be without William Saliba, who is serving a one-match ban following his red card in the 2-0 loss to Bournemouth last weekend.

Additionally, Martin Ødegaard is not expected to return until after the international break.

Timber’s absence from the Netherlands squad, which includes prominent Premier League figures like Virgil van Dijk and Cody Gakpo, underscores the impact of his ongoing injury challenges.

The Netherlands, under the management of Ronald Koeman, are set to face Hungary on November 16 and Bosnia and Herzegovina three days later, but for Arsenal fans, the focus remains on their critical encounter against Liverpool this weekend.
