Arsenal’s pursuit of the Premier League title has been dealt repeated blows this season as injuries continue to wreak havoc on Mikel Arteta’s squad.

The latest international break has only exacerbated the Gunners’ troubles, with several key players now facing fitness concerns ahead of their crucial encounter with Nottingham Forest this weekend.

Mounting Injury List Takes a Toll

The Gunners entered the 2024-25 campaign as serious contenders to dethrone Manchester City.

However, injuries have significantly hampered their momentum, with major absences in several critical matches.

The first blow came in September when captain Martin Ødegaard sustained an ankle injury during Norway’s match against Austria.

The influential midfielder left the pitch in tears and missed a series of important fixtures before finally returning earlier this month.

The situation worsened in October when Bukayo Saka limped off during England duty.

Though his injury was less severe, it kept him out of Arsenal’s first Premier League loss of the season against Bournemouth.

Both Saka and Declan Rice, another key figure, subsequently withdrew from the England squad during the current international break due to ongoing concerns, leaving their availability for the Forest clash uncertain.

Adding to Arteta’s headaches, Leandro Trossard suffered an injury during Belgium’s match against Israel.

The versatile forward left the pitch in the first half, potentially ruling him out for the upcoming weekend.

Meanwhile, defensive options remain thin, with Ben White, Takehiro Tomiyasu, Riccardo Calafiori, and Kieran Tierney all sidelined.

Ødegaard Prioritises Recovery

There was at least one silver lining for Arteta, as Ødegaard withdrew from Norway duty to focus on his recovery.

The captain acknowledged the challenges of returning to full fitness after an extended layoff.

“I got through the match at the weekend, but it was a rather abrupt transition from the last nine weeks,” Ødegaard explained.

“In this kind of process, you don’t just go from being injured to suddenly being completely healthy. You tend to have a reaction to what happens, and then it’s about how you react to it. Together with the NFF’s medical team, we’ve looked at it and agreed that it’s better for me to go back and make a full recovery.”

Ødegaard also clarified that his withdrawal was a joint decision between Norway’s medical team and himself, unrelated to pressure from Arsenal or Norway manager Ståle Solbakken.

Title Hopes Under Threat

Arsenal’s injury struggles have had a tangible impact on their title campaign, with critical points dropped in matches where key players were absent.

The match against Nottingham Forest, a team enjoying an impressive start under Nuno Espírito Santo, could have significant repercussions even at this early stage of the season.

As the Gunners prepare for this challenging fixture, Arteta faces tough decisions on how to manage a stretched squad and keep Arsenal’s title hopes alive amidst mounting adversity.
