Arsenal’s hopes of an unprecedented quadruple have been crushed following a stunning FA Cup quarter-final defeat to Southampton at St Mary’s Stadium.

Just two weeks after suffering disappointment in the Carabao Cup final against Manchester City, the Gunners were dumped out of the FA Cup by Shea Charles’ 85th-minute winner for the Saints.

The defeat marked Arsenal’s first back-to-back losses of the season and ended dreams that had been building since the club were widely tipped for a historic quadruple just 14 days earlier.

Performance concerns emerge

Despite dominating possession and registering 23 shots, Arsenal never truly looked capable of securing victory after Viktor Gyokeres had cancelled out Ross Stewart’s first-half opener.

Former Arsenal forward Theo Walcott observed a “nervous energy” around Mikel Arteta and his coaching staff that reminded him of previous seasons when pressure affected the team’s performance.

“Visually watching Mikel on the sidelines, it was elements of previous years where that energy reflected into the team,” Walcott explained. “It was very tense. Not just Mikel but a lot of the staff were out there at times. It was like too many cooks in the kitchen, too many messages.”

Injury disruption hits squad

Arteta made seven changes from the team that faced Manchester City at Wembley, though this wasn’t purely tactical rotation. Arsenal have been dealing with a significant injury crisis, with 11 players withdrawing from international duty during the recent break.

Key players Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka and Leandro Trossard were absent from the squad entirely, while William Saliba was relegated to the bench. Captain Martin Odegaard made his first start since January, and concerns deepened when Gabriel Magalhaes was forced off with a knee injury.

However, Christian Norgaard, who started the match, rejected suggestions that the unfamiliar lineup contributed to the defeat. “No, there are no excuses. It has nothing to do with injuries or availability,” the midfielder stated. “We had a really good team on the pitch that should have been competing on a high level.”

Title race pressure mounts

The loss leaves Arsenal competing in just two competitions – the Premier League and Champions League – with Manchester City appearing reinvigorated after their own cup success earlier in the day.

City demolished Liverpool 4-0 in their FA Cup quarter-final, demonstrating the form that could prove decisive when Arsenal visit the Etihad Stadium in April.

Arteta attempted to rally his squad after the defeat, taking full responsibility while defending his players’ efforts over nine months. “Someone has to take responsibility. That’s me and we have the most beautiful period of the season ahead of us,” he said.

The Gunners now face the challenge of ensuring these consecutive setbacks don’t derail their remaining campaigns, with the pressure of a £250m summer spend and 22 years without a Premier League title weighing heavily.
