Mikel Arteta has confirmed that Declan Rice has been managing injury problems while continuing to feature for Arsenal, revealing the midfielder’s determination to play through discomfort during the crucial run-in.

Rice was among nine players who withdrew from international duty, with England manager Thomas Tuchel stating the Arsenal star was in “clear discomfort” when assessed at St George’s Park.

When informed that Rice has been described as playing at just 70 percent capacity, Arteta acknowledged the situation and praised the midfielder’s commitment to the team.

Manager praises Rice’s dedication

“Yeah, he’s been phenomenal because that’s been going on for a while and the fact that he’s been able to perform and consistently commit to the team in that manner,” Arteta said during his press conference.

“He talks about how much he wants to play for us and how much he wants to win, and that’s great to see.”

The Gunners boss also revealed private conversations with Rice that highlight the player’s eagerness to contribute during Arsenal’s title push and cup campaigns.

Squad updates ahead of Southampton clash

During Friday’s press conference, Arteta confirmed that Piero Hincapie, Noni Madueke and Eberechi Eze would all be unavailable for the FA Cup quarter-final against Southampton.

While Jurrien Timber and Martin Odegaard were confirmed as being in contention, the manager remained coy about the availability of Rice, Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Magalhaes, William Saliba, Leandro Trossard and Martin Zubimendi.

“You will see. I continue the speculation so you can do it, and you can judge it afterwards,” Arteta said when pressed about those who returned early from international duty.

Crucial period ahead for Arsenal

Arsenal face a demanding schedule with three significant fixtures in seven days. The Saints clash kicks off a period that includes a Champions League quarter-final first leg against Sporting CP in Portugal and a Premier League encounter with Bournemouth at Emirates Stadium.

Rice’s minutes, along with other key players, are likely to be carefully managed until the end of the season as Arsenal chase success on multiple fronts.

The Gunners could face an even busier period in late April, with a potential title decider against Manchester City looming. Should they progress in cup competitions, Arsenal could have two semi-final ties within a week of that crucial league encounter.

Arsenal’s commitment to managing player fitness while maintaining competitive intensity will be crucial as they pursue what could be a historic conclusion to the campaign, with potential finals at Wembley and in Budapest on the horizon.
