Arteta urges calm over £16m Arsenal wonderkid after record-breaking goal

Mikel Arteta has moved to dial down expectations around Max Dowman following the teenager’s record-breaking goal against Everton, urging patience as the 16-year-old continues his development at the club.
The Academy graduate became Arsenal’s youngest ever goalscorer when he netted in the dying moments against the Toffees, carrying the ball the length of the pitch before rolling it into an empty net to secure a crucial victory.
Manager calls for measured approach
Speaking in his latest press conference, according to Arseblog, Arteta responded with a simple “Calma” when asked if Dowman might be ready to start games for the Gunners.

The Spanish manager has been keen to stress context around the midfielder’s breakthrough moment, particularly with some already suggesting the youngster could force his way into England’s World Cup plans.
“Let’s go game by game, please,” he said in response to talk of an international call-up.
When discussing the challenge of allowing young players to develop at the right pace, Arteta explained his philosophy: “I think they [young players] have to cook at the optimal speed in relation to what they need and what they demand.”
Unexpected manner of breakthrough goal
While Arteta admitted he expected strong decision-making from Dowman, the nature of his debut goal caught even the manager by surprise.
“I didn’t expect that kind of goal, that’s for sure,” said Arteta. “But his attitude and his decision-making, yes [I expected]. If not, I wouldn’t have made a decision to play him.”
The Arsenal boss praised the teenager’s fearless approach, describing it as “very inspiring” to see someone playing with such freedom in a high-pressure context.
Dowman’s record-breaking moment came in similar fashion to Cesc Fabregas, whose record he broke, by rolling the ball into an empty net. However, unlike his predecessor, the current youngster had carried it the full length of the pitch in the final seconds of a must-win match.
Media attention presents new challenge
Arteta acknowledged the growing media attention around Dowman, particularly highlighted by his appearance in a new adidas commercial alongside club legend Ian Wright.
The manager made a direct appeal to journalists for help in managing expectations: “I need your help with that, guys. Because if we’re saying that [he needs to be protected] and I have 15 questions on Max, it doesn’t really help.”
He emphasized the importance of supporting structures around the player, noting that Martin Odegaard serves as a valuable example of someone who broke through at a young age, while also highlighting the role of Dowman’s family in keeping him grounded.
Arsenal will continue to manage Dowman’s development carefully as they balance his undeniable talent with the need to protect a player still learning his trade under an increasingly bright spotlight.
