Ben White has been called up to the England squad for the first time in almost four years, ending his self-imposed international exile under Thomas Tuchel’s management.

The Arsenal defender received a late call-up to replace Liverpool’s Jarell Quansah, who withdrew due to a thigh injury. Crystal Palace midfielder Eberechi Eze has also pulled out with a calf problem and been replaced by Newcastle’s Harvey Barnes.

White’s last appearance for England came in March 2022 during a 3-0 victory over Ivory Coast. Despite being selected for Gareth Southgate’s 2022 World Cup squad, the defender left the tournament early and subsequently made himself unavailable for international duty for the remainder of Southgate’s tenure.

Fresh start under Tuchel

Speaking last year, new England head coach Tuchel confirmed that White had expressed renewed interest in representing his country. The Arsenal star will now have the opportunity to earn his fifth international cap after a prolonged absence from the setup.

Tuchel has emphasized the importance of positional versatility as he prepares to name his World Cup squad in May. White fits this criteria perfectly, being capable of operating effectively at both right-back and centre-back – similar qualities to the injured Quansah.

The timing of White’s return comes at a crucial period for both club and country. Arsenal currently sit second in the Premier League table and are competing across multiple fronts, with the defender having been a consistent performer in Mikel Arteta’s backline.

Barnes gets another chance

Newcastle’s Harvey Barnes will also be looking to make an impression, having been called up to replace Eze. The winger, who has scored 14 goals across all competitions this season while operating on both flanks, will be seeking just his second England cap.

Barnes made his international debut six years ago in a friendly victory over Wales but has since struggled to establish himself in the England setup. Scotland made a significant effort to convince the versatile attacker to switch his international allegiance, but head coach Steve Clarke confirmed last month that Barnes had committed to pursuing his England career.

The call-ups represent a fresh opportunity for both players to stake their claims ahead of the 2026 World Cup. White’s return in particular marks a significant moment, bringing an end to one of the most notable international exiles in recent English football history.
