Beth Mead will depart Arsenal at the end of the season when her contract expires, bringing to a close a remarkable nine-year journey that saw her become one of the club’s greatest ever players.

The England forward joined Arsenal from Sunderland in January 2017 and went on to make 265 appearances while scoring 86 goals for the Gunners. Her trophy cabinet during her time in north London includes a WSL title, three Conti Cups and a Champions League triumph.

Euro 2022 heroics cement legendary status

Mead’s standout moment came during England’s victorious Euro 2022 campaign, where she claimed both the Golden Boot and Player of the Tournament awards. Her performances that summer earned her second place in the 2022 Ballon d’Or voting, along with BBC Women’s Footballer of the Year, England’s Player of the Year, and BBC Sports Personality of the Year honours.

The forward continued to deliver in crucial moments, setting up Stina Blackstenius’ winning goal in the 2025 Champions League Final before helping England to another European Championship triumph that summer.

Director of Women’s Football Clare Wheatley paid tribute to Mead’s contribution: “Beth has made a huge contribution to our football club over nine years, and will go down in history as one of our best forwards and a legend of the club. Beth is such a special person and will always be welcome at Arsenal.”

Man City move on the horizon

According to Arseblog, while Arsenal did offer Mead a new contract, Manchester City’s proposal includes a longer-term deal. The expectation is that she will sign for City unless circumstances change significantly.

Mead’s departure represents a significant loss for Arsenal Women, who will bid farewell to a player whose impact extended far beyond her goal contributions. Her leadership, experience and big-game mentality helped establish Arsenal as one of Europe’s elite women’s teams during her tenure.

The 30-year-old’s move to City would see her join former teammate Vivianne Miedema at the Etihad Stadium, as Arsenal continue their squad restructuring ahead of the new season. Mead’s legacy at Arsenal is already secure, with her name etched alongside the club’s greatest ever players after nearly a decade of exceptional service.
