David Raya delivered a masterclass performance to keep Arsenal’s Champions League dreams alive, making three crucial saves in a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Sporting Lisbon in the quarter-final first leg.

The Spanish goalkeeper was the standout performer at Estádio José Alvalade, denying the Portuguese champions on multiple occasions before Kai Havertz struck with a composed finish in the 92nd minute to give the Gunners a slender advantage heading into next week’s second leg.

Raya’s crucial interventions

Raya’s brilliance was evident from the sixth minute when he got the faintest of touches to divert Maxi Araújo’s shot onto the crossbar after the Uruguayan had been played through by a stunning pass from Ousmane Diomande. The 28-year-old’s reflexes were tested again throughout the evening, with his double save from Geny Catamo and Luis Suárez in the closing stages proving pivotal.

According to The Guardian, the performance served as a timely reminder of the importance of playing the excellent goalkeeper in big games, particularly after Mikel Arteta’s decision to start Kepa Arrizabalaga over Raya in the recent Carabao Cup final defeat to Manchester City.

Late drama delivers crucial advantage

Arsenal struggled to create clear-cut chances for much of the contest, with Viktor Gyökeres largely isolated up front and the midfield trio of Martín Zubimendi, Declan Rice, and Martin Ødegaard failing to provide the creative spark needed against Sporting’s well-organised defence.

The breakthrough finally came in the 92nd minute when Gabriel Martinelli, who had replaced Leandro Trossard, delivered a cross from the left. Havertz, introduced for Ødegaard in the 70th minute, showed excellent composure to control the ball with a delicate touch before rolling his finish past Rui Silva.

The German’s intervention proved crucial for a side that had endured a difficult period following cup exits, with the goal potentially serving as the catalyst Arsenal need for their final push of the season. Despite dominating possession with 488 passes, the Premier League leaders had looked increasingly vulnerable to Sporting’s counter-attacks as the match wore on.

Arsenal now hold a narrow but valuable lead heading into the second leg, with Raya’s heroics ensuring they remain in control of their Champions League destiny. The victory provides much-needed momentum for Arteta’s side as they look to bounce back from recent disappointments and maintain their pursuit of silverware this season.
