Ex-England star questions if Arsenal really need £55m Newcastle midfielder

Former England international Chris Waddle has questioned whether Arsenal actually need to pursue Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali, despite the Italian midfielder’s impressive performances in the Premier League.
The Gunners were reportedly offered the chance to sign Tonali in January, with the club viewing him as a high-quality addition who could provide stability and influence in midfield. The 26-year-old has continued to impress at St. James’ Park, demonstrating consistency and technical ability in every appearance.

Waddle raises doubts over necessity
However, Waddle believes Arsenal already have a similar player in their ranks. Speaking to the Metro, the former Newcastle winger drew direct comparisons between Tonali and Declan Rice.
“Tonali has had a couple of great seasons, he’s got better this season. He’s a good age and I’m not surprised there’s a lot of clubs interested in him,” Waddle said.
“He’s a very economical player, he’s a little bit like Declan Rice, let’s be honest, he’s very consistent with his pass ratio, he’s got a good shot and he’s got a good engine.”
Waddle continued: “In my mind, he’s a very similar player to Declan Rice, though. Do Arsenal really need another player like that? I know squads strengthen every year and that’s how football moves on.”
Newcastle’s stance complicates potential move
Any potential transfer would face significant obstacles, with Newcastle showing reluctance to sell their key players. The Magpies have consistently resisted approaches for their top performers, and convincing them to part with Tonali would prove challenging for any interested club.
Arsenal’s midfield department already boasts some of the Premier League’s finest talent, and integrating another player of similar profile could create squad balance issues. Rice has been exceptional since his move from West Ham United, establishing himself as a crucial component of Mikel Arteta’s system.
Despite the valid concerns raised by Waddle, having both Rice and Tonali in the squad could provide Arsenal with valuable depth and versatility. The competition for places would give Arteta multiple options for controlling midfield battles across different competitions.
The comparisons with Rice actually highlight Tonali’s quality rather than diminish his potential value. Both players offer consistency in possession, defensive solidity, and the ability to contribute in the final third when required.
Arsenal’s pursuit of top-level talent continues as they look to build a squad capable of competing on multiple fronts, though any move for Tonali would require significant negotiation with Newcastle and careful consideration of squad dynamics.
