Gabriel Jesus has returned to Brazil during the international break to train with former club Palmeiras, making comments that will catch the attention of Arsenal’s hierarchy ahead of the summer transfer window.

The striker jetted off to his homeland where he is completing additional training sessions with the club that developed him before his 2017 move to Manchester City.

Speaking to local media about his visit, Jesus explained his reasoning for the temporary return to familiar surroundings.

“It’s something [visiting Palmeiras] I’ve always done throughout my career during off periods. I think you can make the most of both things. Family moments with the people we love but without neglecting your health and fitness.”

However, it was his next comments that will likely resonate with sporting director Andrea Berta, who is focused on generating funds this summer for reinvestment.

“I always have the doors open. Everyone knows Palmeiras is my home, where I grew up, and I always have the doors open to go to the club. Arsenal and Palmeiras have a great relationship and approved my training here.”

European preference but Brazil remains option

According to UOL, Jesus is prioritising his European career in the immediate future, with a return to Palmeiras only becoming an option if no suitable offers materialise from clubs on this continent.

The 28-year-old’s situation appears complex given his previous public commitment to Arsenal. Speaking ahead of his two-goal performance against Inter Milan in the Champions League earlier this season, Jesus expressed his desire to remain at the club.

“My wish is to stay at Arsenal. I have a contract as well. I want to extend my contract, I want to stay, I want to win trophies with Arsenal because I came here with a purpose and that’s it.”

Transfer complications ahead

Arsenal currently have attacking options in Kai Havertz and Viktor Gyokeres, while reports suggest the club maintains interest in other forwards including Julian Alvarez.

Jesus’s significant wage package could complicate any potential departure, though a European move would likely command a higher transfer fee than a return to Brazilian football.

The striker has endured a frustrating time with injuries since his 2022 arrival from Manchester City, limiting him to what he describes as “maybe one-and-a-half or two seasons” of consistent action across four campaigns.

With Berta keen to balance the books this summer while strengthening the squad, Jesus’s comments about keeping his options open will be closely monitored as the transfer window approaches.
