Guardiola’s Title Admission After Draw Leaves Arsenal 9 Points Clear

Pep Guardiola acknowledged the Premier League title race could be “over” for Manchester City after his side dropped crucial points in a 1-1 draw with West Ham, leaving Arsenal nine points clear at the summit.

The City manager had warned before the London Stadium clash that his team could not afford to drop points, telling reporters: “We’re still there, knowing that if we drop points it will be over.”

Those words proved prophetic as Konstantinos Mavropanos’ header cancelled out Bernardo Silva’s opener, earning West Ham a valuable point in their relegation battle while dealing a significant blow to City’s title hopes.

Arsenal Capitalise on City’s Slip

The dropped points proved costly as Arsenal had earlier secured a dramatic 2-0 victory over Everton at the Emirates. The Gunners looked set to drop points themselves before late goals from Viktor Gyokeres and 16-year-old Max Dowman sealed the three points.

The result leaves Arsenal with a commanding nine-point advantage over the defending champions, though City do have a game in hand and will face the Gunners directly later in the campaign.

Guardiola Refuses to Concede Defeat

Despite the daunting deficit, Guardiola insisted the title race remains alive, though he admitted the challenge ahead is “so difficult.”

“It’s not over. We didn’t lose. It’s not over. We will continue,” the City boss said. “Nine points is a lot against Arsenal but we have to try until the end. When it is not possible, then we congratulate the champion, but we have to try.”

The Catalan highlighted City’s remaining fixture against Arsenal at the Etihad as a potential turning point: “We have a game in hand and this game at home against Arsenal. I’m not saying it will be easy to beat them but there is hope.”

City’s title defence now faces a critical juncture, with the club needing an almost perfect run-in while hoping Arsenal falter. The second successive Premier League draw has left Guardiola’s side in an increasingly precarious position.

Both clubs will turn their attention to European matters on Tuesday, with Arsenal hosting Bayer Leverkusen in their Champions League last-16 second leg following a 1-1 first-leg draw. City face the more daunting task of overturning a three-goal deficit against Real Madrid at the Etihad Stadium.
