Rice, who joined Arsenal for £100m from West Ham United, had an impressive debut season in 2023/24, playing a key role in Arsenal’s near-title run in the Premier League.

Despite his success at the club level, Rice has faced challenges at Euro 2024, notably during England’s disappointing 1-1 draw with Denmark.

McClean’s Harsh Words

James McClean, a seasoned player with 103 caps for the Republic of Ireland, did not hold back in his assessment of Rice.

“I think Declan Rice is very overrated,” McClean stated. “He’s a good footballer, but the way the English media praise him is excessive. To me, he’s not world-class. A world-class player is someone who would make it into any team in the world. I don’t see Rice replacing Rodri at Manchester City or dictating games like Toni Kroos.”

McClean continued, “For a hundred million-pound player, I expect more than just short passes. I want to see him break lines and contribute more offensively.”

Rice’s Calm Retort

Declan Rice, who played three times for the Republic of Ireland in 2018 before switching to England, responded to McClean’s remarks with a measured tone.

“It might be a bit of bitterness towards me not playing for Ireland, but I’ve not got a bad word to say about him,” Rice said. “I see the comments but don’t put too much energy into it. It is what it is, and you move on.”

Rice emphasized his positive interactions with McClean during their brief time together on the Irish team. “I played with James for Ireland for three games, and we got on well. I thought he was a top guy. When I left Ireland for England, I heard he wasn’t happy about it, but I’m not here to criticize him. He’s had a great career with over a hundred caps for Ireland.”

Reflecting on their different career stages, Rice added, “He’s 35 and nearing the end of his career, while I’m 25 and still progressing. He’s entitled to his opinion, and I’ve dealt with many such opinions before.”

Despite the criticism, Rice remains focused on his future with Arsenal and England. As he continues to develop and prove his worth on the international stage, his response to McClean’s comments shows maturity and a determination to rise above negativity.
