Mikel Arteta faces a significant tactical challenge as Arsenal prepare for the final stretch of the season, with a month-long injury to a key creative player threatening to derail the Gunners’ title ambitions.
Eberechi Eze is expected to miss at least four weeks with a calf injury sustained before the Carabao Cup final, according to the Evening Standard. The 27-year-old’s absence comes at a crucial time, as statistics show he is twice as effective between March and May compared to the rest of the year.

The injury compounds Arsenal’s creativity problems that were exposed in Sunday’s Carabao Cup final defeat to Manchester City. Arteta’s side struggled to break down Pep Guardiola’s tactical setup, which saw City deploy four players in front of their midfield and invite Arsenal to have possession without penetration.
Midfield fatigue becoming a factor
Part of the issue stems from over-reliance on Declan Rice and Martin Zubimendi, who have played nearly every Premier League minute this season. Rice recently admitted he was “shattered” from the relentless fixture schedule, while Zubimendi has started every league match and is now showing signs of physical strain.
The absence of Martin Odegaard since February 12 due to a knee injury has further limited Arteta’s options. The captain’s return will be crucial, as he possesses the technical quality to drop deep and progress Arsenal up the pitch in ways they currently struggle to achieve.
Tactical solutions on the horizon
Several options present themselves to Arteta during this international break. With Odegaard’s eventual return, the manager could deploy him in a deeper playmaking role, allowing Kai Havertz to operate more as a second striker rather than the false nine position where he struggled against City.
Another possibility involves repositioning Bukayo Saka as a number 10, a role Arteta experimented with earlier this season with promising results. This tactical switch could help reignite Saka’s form while providing the unpredictable edge that Eze typically offers.
The emergence of 16-year-old Max Dowman presents an intriguing wildcard option. The academy prospect has shown fearlessness and an ability to commit defenders, qualities that could prove valuable in upcoming fixtures against Southampton and Bournemouth.
Arsenal’s attack has lacked the subtlety and off-the-cuff creativity that Eze provides, with players often choosing to recycle possession rather than attempt ambitious passes or shots. The challenge for Arteta is finding fresh tactical solutions to unlock stubborn defenses without relying solely on the physical presence of Rice and Zubimendi in midfield.
With the biggest prizes still ahead of them, Arsenal must evolve tactically to overcome teams that have studied City’s defensive blueprint from Wembley. The international break provides Arteta with time to implement changes that could define the remainder of the season.
