How Tim Lewis caused Arsenal’s low relationship with Man City

The departure of executive Tim Lewis marks a significant shift in Arsenal’s boardroom dynamics and could reshape Premier League politics.
Tim Lewis’ exit as executive vice-chair has concluded a five-year tenure that fundamentally shaped the Gunners’ stance on financial regulation and governance within English football.
Lewis joined the Arsenal board in 2020 before being promoted in March 2023, becoming one of the most influential figures at the Emirates. His role bridged the gap between the ownership, Kroenke Sports & Entertainment (KSE) and the football operations, establishing him as a key voice in Premier League politics during a transformative period for the league.

After five years with Arsenal, Tim Lewis stepped down from the Board and left the club yesterday. The timing coincides with Richard Garlick’s promotion to Chief Executive Officer, marking Arsenal’s most significant leadership overhaul since their recent revival under Mikel Arteta.
Josh Kroenke said: “At this moment, we would like to thank Tim for his continued dedication and commitment to Arsenal in a period of transformational change for the club. He has played a pivotal role and ensured we are in a great position to continue to deliver our strategy in our ambition to win major trophies.”
According to The Independent, Lewis had become one of the most forceful and influential voices in Premier League governance over the past half-decade. His corporate legal background positioned him as a staunch advocate for strong financial regulation, making him a prominent figure in debates surrounding financial fair play and state ownership of football clubs.
The corporate lawyer took a particularly strong line on ongoing investigations into Manchester City over the Football Leaks affair. This stance created considerable tension between the two clubs, with their relationship hitting an all-time low in recent years.
Last season, in Arsenal’s fiery 2-2 draw at The Etihad, footage showed Arsenal’s Lewis storming out of the director’s box following John Stones’ late equaliser.
Manchester City travel to The Emirates this Sunday, and while Lewis is not expected to be present, it promises to be a fascinating encounter both on and off the pitch, as Pep Guardiola’s side will seek revenge for the 5-1 demolition in February.
