Ian Wright: “The ladies have SAVED this club!”

Club legend, Ian Wright, believes that Arsenal Women have saved the club this season, following their UEFA Women’s Champions League victory.
The Gunners beat Barcelona Feminí 1-0 on Saturday evening, courtesy of a goal from Sweden striker and substitute, Stina Blackstenius, in the 74th minute.
Despite being largely tipped as the underdogs for the tie, the North London club had an unforgettable day at José Alvalade Stadium, in Lisbon, as they defeated the holders, who had lost just three games this season.

Former club striker and Arsenal Women fanatic, Ian Wright, was pictured in what seemed to be tears during celebrations on the pitch, before speaking to co-chair Josh Kroenke, and managing director, Richard Garlick.
Just last month, Wright rejected an apology from fellow presenter, Eni Aluko, after she said that men such as the 61 year-old “should be aware” of the opportunities they take in the women’s game.
Speaking to TNT Sports after the historic victory, Wright revealed: “Honestly, I can’t believe it! This is the first time I have watched a game where my heart went funny. I’m delighted for them, no-one gave us a chance really, I was worried for them.”
The legend then added: “It’s saved the club! The embarrassment of not getting anything this season when we played so well in the season with the men. The ladies have saved the club, we’ve got something to celebrate! They need a parade.”
Mikel Arteta’s side finished second once again in the Premier League this season, and after being knocked out of the men’s Champions League in the semi-final, the Women’s Champions League trophy will be the only silverware brought back to The Emirates this campaign.
As the men will continue their search for major silverware next campaign, Renée Slegers’ side will be eager to build on their European success, by aiming to retain the trophy, and challenge for the Women’s Super League title next campaign.
