Mikel Arteta has issued an injury update on defenders Gabriel and Jurrien Timber as Arsenal prepare for their EFL Cup tie against Preston North End on Wednesday.

The news follows a challenging match against Liverpool, which ended in a 2-2 draw and raised concerns over the fitness of key players.

Injury Concerns for Gunners

Both Gabriel and Timber were substituted during the encounter with Liverpool, raising alarm bells ahead of the trip to Deepdale.

Gabriel sustained a knock just before the 55th minute after a collision with Darwin Núñez, while Timber, who was recently returning from injury, appeared to suffer from cramping.

Arteta commented on their conditions, noting the uncertainty surrounding Gabriel’s injury: “I don’t know what happened. I don’t know if it’s the knee joint or the ankle. They’re assessing him now.”

Regarding Timber, Arteta expressed his appreciation for the medical team’s efforts to expedite the defender’s recovery, stating, “He was so willing… I don’t know the extent of the injury if there is one.”

In addition to the injuries to Gabriel and Timber, Arsenal were already without Riccardo Calafiori, Martin Ødegaard, Takehiro Tomiyasu, and Kieran Tierney, as well as William Saliba, who is serving a suspension.

This shortage of available players may prompt Arteta to field a relatively strong lineup against Preston, given the current lack of squad depth.

Preston North End’s Recent Form

The upcoming match marks the second meeting between Arsenal and Preston in under eight years, following their last encounter in January 2017, where Arsenal secured a late 2-1 victory with a goal from Olivier Giroud.

In stark contrast to the Gunners, Preston are facing their own struggles.

They recently dropped points in a frustrating draw against Plymouth Argyle, having led 3-0 before conceding three goals without reply, the final one coming in injury time.

To add to their woes, Robbie Brady, one of their standout players this season, was forced to leave the pitch early due to an ankle injury sustained during the match.

North End manager Paul Heckingbottom confirmed that Brady’s injury is significant, stating, “We know there is damage there. How much, we won’t be certain until we get him assessed.”

A Chance for Preston to Make an Impact

Heckingbottom is relishing the opportunity to face Arteta’s Arsenal, understanding the rarity of such encounters for a Championship side.

He has encouraged his players to approach the match without fear, viewing it as a “free hit” against one of the top teams in world football.

While expectations may be low for a Preston victory, the opportunity to compete against Arsenal should inspire the team to strive for an upset.

As the Gunners look to advance in the EFL Cup, the upcoming match against Preston North End presents both challenges and opportunities.

Arteta will be hoping for swift updates on his injured defenders while also looking for his squad to demonstrate their resilience against a determined Preston side.

The match promises to be an intriguing contest as Arsenal seek to solidify their position in the tournament amidst ongoing injury concerns.
