Former Italy defender Marco Materazzi has advised Sandro Tonali to turn down potential interest from Arsenal and remain at Newcastle United, emphasizing the importance of loyalty over ambition.

According to Goal, the World Cup winner believes Tonali should prioritize building a legacy at St. James’ Park rather than pursuing an immediate move to a bigger club.

Arsenal have been monitoring the Italian midfielder closely as he continues to impress in the Premier League. His performances have reinforced the view that he ranks among the most complete midfielders currently operating in England, attracting attention from several top clubs across Europe.

Materazzi’s loyalty message

The former Inter Milan defender made his stance clear when discussing Tonali’s future prospects.

“Sandro Tonali can play in any team in Italy and England but he has to decide if he wants to stay at Newcastle United because they believed in him,” Materazzi said. “The city and the fans and the club believed in him and stuck by him. He has to think about that too, not just whether he could play for Arsenal, Liverpool or Manchester United. I would like him to stay at Newcastle and build his legacy.”

The comments reference Newcastle’s support during Tonali’s difficult period following his betting suspension, which sidelined him for much of his first season in English football after his £55 million move from AC Milan.

Arsenal’s Champions League advantage

Despite Materazzi’s advice, Arsenal’s current position could prove decisive in any potential pursuit. The Gunners’ involvement in the Champions League and their ability to challenge for major honours presents an attractive proposition that Newcastle cannot currently match.

This Champions League factor could provide Arsenal with a significant advantage in negotiations, particularly as Tonali approaches the peak years of his career and seeks to compete at the highest level consistently.

However, Newcastle are expected to protect one of their most valuable assets fiercely. The Magpies would likely demand a substantial transfer fee before considering any sale, potentially complicating matters for Arsenal if the valuation exceeds their planned budget.

Tonali’s situation reflects the classic dilemma facing talented players at ambitious but ultimately smaller clubs. The midfielder must weigh immediate success opportunities against the chance to become a defining figure at Newcastle, where he has already shown his quality despite early setbacks.

The Italian international’s decision will ultimately depend on whether he prioritizes Champions League football and trophy prospects or chooses to honor the loyalty Newcastle showed during his suspension period.
