Mikel Arteta’s side managed to hold City to a 1-1 draw, despite playing with 10 men for nearly an hour after Leandro Trossard’s controversial red card.

John Stones’ late goal saved a point for the champions, but Arsenal’s defensive display and resilience have sparked debate.

Instead of praising the Gunners for their efforts, many pundits, including Carragher, have suggested that Arsenal relied on questionable tactics to get a favourable result.

According to Carragher, Arsenal’s approach resembled the “dark arts,” with some accusing the team of using time-wasting strategies to gain an advantage.

Arsenal Labelled Premier League’s Biggest Time-Wasters

Recent statistics show that Arsenal lead the Premier League in time-wasting this season.

Carragher pointed out that Arsenal seem to exploit a loophole that forces the referee to halt the game if the goalkeeper is injured.

On The Overlap, Carragher stated, “There’s one thing I do notice Arsenal doing more than anyone. I don’t know if the stats back me up, but I think the goalkeeper goes down a lot more than other goalkeepers in tense situations.”

He went on to compare Arsenal’s tactics to those of Jose Mourinho, a manager known for finding ways to exploit the rules to his team’s benefit.

Carragher added, “The rule is a goalkeeper can’t go off, so that’s definitely one that the coaching staff at Arsenal are more switched on about than anyone else.”

Carragher specifically mentioned Arsenal’s goalkeeper David Raya, who he believes goes down during pressure situations more than most.

Carragher and Scholes Weigh in on ‘Cheating’ Claims

During the discussion, former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes chimed in, directly labelling Arsenal’s tactic as ‘cheating.’

Carragher, not wanting to take full responsibility for such an accusation, replied, “It is, but you said it, so you can have the headline, not me.”

In the midst of these accusations, Arsenal are set to face Bolton in the Carabao Cup.

Ahead of the game, Arteta defended his team, stating that adjusting their tactics was a necessary learning experience from past defeats, especially heavy losses like the 5-0 loss against Manchester City in a similar situation.

Arteta said, “We’d better learn. If not, I would be thick, very thick.”

Arsenal’s manager remains focused on the future, as his team continues to navigate both criticism and competition, striving to build on their strong form this season.
