England manager Thomas Tuchel has left the door open for Arsenal wonderkid Max Dowman to be included in his World Cup squad this summer, describing the 16-year-old as “impressive” despite not selecting him for upcoming friendlies.

The Arsenal academy graduate was excluded from Tuchel’s surprise 35-man squad for England’s matches against Uruguay and Japan at Wembley later this month. However, the German coach has refused to rule out a potential World Cup call-up if Dowman continues his rapid development at Emirates Stadium.

“I keep the door open for anyone with any age,” Tuchel told reporters at Wembley. “Why would I rule it out? Of course it’s impressive what he’s doing. It’s impressive the feedback I get from players and people who know him.”

Dowman announced himself on the global stage last weekend with a stunning solo goal as a substitute against Everton, becoming the youngest scorer in Premier League history. The strike has accelerated discussions about his potential international future, with Tuchel acknowledging the teenager’s rapid progress.

“We will have a look at it and take the last decision when we build the squad in May,” the England boss added. The World Cup squad announcement is expected next month, giving Dowman several weeks to impress Mikel Arteta and potentially earn more first-team opportunities.

Precedent exists for young talent

While Dowman’s age might seem prohibitive, Tuchel pointed to Spain’s Lamine Yamal as precedent for including teenage talent at major tournaments. Yamal became a European Championship winner at just 17, though the England manager stressed the importance of club minutes.

“At the moment he’s not a regular starter, you could argue you should be maybe a starter at your club to be considered,” Tuchel explained. “Had Yamal played more minutes for his club before he played for his country? I would say so, yeah.”

The England manager expressed concern about creating excessive pressure around Dowman, describing feeling “almost parental responsibility” for the youngster’s development.

Arsenal’s trophy hunt could provide opportunities

Arsenal’s pursuit of four trophies between now and the end of the season could provide Dowman with additional chances to showcase his abilities. The club remains active in the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, and Carabao Cup, potentially offering rotation opportunities for the teenager.

Tuchel’s unprecedented 35-man squad selection represents his attempt to evaluate options ahead of the World Cup in America. The squad will be split across the two friendlies, with senior players including Bukayo Saka joining later in the camp.

Arsenal fans will hope Dowman’s meteoric rise continues, potentially making him one of the youngest World Cup participants in England’s history if Tuchel follows through on keeping that door open.
