Arsenal’s difficult start to the 2024/25 Premier League season has raised questions about their summer recruitment, with pundit Steve Nicol singling out Raheem Sterling as the league’s worst signing so far.

As the Gunners prepare to face Nottingham Forest after the international break, this criticism adds further pressure to a side struggling for consistency.

Nicol Questions Sterling’s Impact

Sterling joined Arsenal on loan from Chelsea in a dramatic deadline-day deal last summer, arriving with the expectation that his experience and quality would bolster Mikel Arteta’s squad.

However, the 29-year-old has struggled to make an impression at the Emirates, registering just one goal in eight appearances, including four starts.

Steve Nicol, speaking on ESPN FC, did not hold back in his assessment of Sterling’s contributions.

“He’s done zero,” Nicol said.

“At the very least, come on and give [Gabriel] Martinelli and [Bukayo] Saka a break, push the rest of the players to be better. He’s done nothing, absolutely zero. If you sign somebody and they do nothing, that’s not good.”

When challenged by host Dan Thomas, who suggested Sterling’s limited role was a factor, Nicol maintained his stance.

“I expected more than nothing at all, absolutely,” he said, reiterating his disappointment.

Sterling’s Struggles Contrasted with Teammates’ Praise

While Nicol’s criticism was harsh, not everyone agrees with his assessment.

Mikel Arteta recently described Sterling as “exceptional” and highlighted his ability to influence games.

Similarly, Oleksandr Zinchenko defended the England international, emphasising the potential Sterling brings to the squad.

“He’s the guy who can always make the difference,” Zinchenko said.

“The impact he can have for any team around the world is amazing, honestly. On his day, he’s unstoppable.”

Despite these endorsements, Sterling’s performances have yet to meet the high expectations that accompanied his arrival.

His lack of impact has coincided with a tough period for Arsenal, who are winless in four Premier League matches and now trail league leaders Liverpool by nine points.

Arsenal Look to Bounce Back Against Forest

Arsenal’s immediate focus will be on turning their fortunes around as they host Nottingham Forest at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday.

Forest, currently enjoying a strong campaign, present a formidable challenge for Arteta’s side, who are desperate for a win to close the gap at the top of the table.

Sterling’s role in the match could be pivotal as Arsenal attempt to rediscover their form.

Whether he can prove his doubters wrong remains to be seen, but with the team struggling and competition for places fierce, the onus is on the former Chelsea forward to deliver.

As the season progresses, Sterling will have opportunities to silence critics like Nicol.

For now, however, his Arsenal career has yet to take off, and the team’s title ambitions hang precariously in the balance.
