Surprise Referee Decision Confirmed for Arsenal’s UCL Clash

UEFA have announced a surprise refereeing appointment for Arsenal’s Champions League last-16 first leg against Bayer Leverkusen on Wednesday evening. Turkish official Halil Umut Meler will take charge of the crucial European clash in Germany.

The appointment comes as a shock given Meler’s limited Champions League experience. The 39-year-old has officiated just two games in the competition – Manchester City’s goalless draw with Sporting CP in 2022 and Benfica’s 5-1 victory over Club Brugge the following year. Notably, he has not refereed a single Champions League match this season.

All-Turkish Officiating Team Selected

An entirely Turkish officiating crew will oversee the fixture, with Ibrahim Caglar Uyarcan and Abdullah Ozkara serving as Meler’s assistants. Cihan Aydin has been named as fourth official. Rob Dieperink of the Netherlands will lead VAR operations, supported by Portuguese official Tiago Martins.

Despite his limited European experience, Meler is highly regarded domestically, having refereed the Turkish Super Cup final between Galatasaray and Fenerbahce earlier this year. UEFA also demonstrated confidence in his abilities by appointing him as fourth official for last season’s Conference League final between Chelsea and Real Betis.

Previous Arsenal Connection

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has encountered Meler before during his tenure. The Turkish referee oversaw the Gunners’ Europa League victory over Molde in a behind-closed-doors fixture back in 2020.

The appointment comes at a particularly demanding period for Arsenal, who are competing across four competitions this month. The Gunners have already faced Brighton and Chelsea in Premier League action, with a visit from Bournemouth still to come. They also progressed past Mansfield Town in the FA Cup fifth round and face Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final later this month.

Injury Concerns Mount

Arsenal’s preparations for the Leverkusen clash are complicated by mounting injury concerns. Arteta revealed that Riccardo Calafiori and Leandro Trossard both picked up “little niggles” during the FA Cup win, while Martin Zubimendi, Declan Rice and Gabriel Magalhaes were rested due to ongoing issues.

“They’ve been carrying issues,” Arteta explained. “The amount of games that the club are playing, it’s obviously super demanding. It was the only time to try to make sure that Arsenal can clean those issues to start the next sequence in the best possible way.”

The first leg against Bayer Leverkusen represents a crucial test for the north London side as they look to progress in Europe’s premier competition while managing their domestic commitments.
