Arsenal secured a crucial 1-0 victory over Sporting in their Champions League quarter-final first leg, but two midfielders remain at risk of missing a potential semi-final clash due to UEFA’s suspension rules.

Both Martin Zubimendi and Christian Norgaard are one booking away from a suspension that would rule them out of the first leg of the semi-final, should Arsenal progress past Sporting next Wednesday at the Emirates.

According to the Evening Standard, UEFA regulations state that all yellow cards expire upon completion of the quarter-finals, meaning any player cautioned in the second leg would be banned for the opening semi-final match against either Barcelona or Atletico Madrid.

Zubimendi’s precarious position

Zubimendi has already served one suspension this campaign after accumulating three bookings in Arsenal’s opening league phase matches. The Spanish midfielder was then cautioned in the first leg of the Gunners’ round-of-16 tie against Bayer Leverkusen, leaving him walking a disciplinary tightrope.

UEFA’s regulations stipulate that players face suspension after three cautions, with further bans following any subsequent odd-numbered caution – meaning Zubimendi’s next booking would trigger another one-match ban.

Norgaard’s limited involvement

Norgaard, who has been a bit-part player this season and did not feature in the first leg against Sporting, also faces potential suspension having been booked during league phase encounters with Slavia Prague and Club Brugge.

The Danish midfielder’s reduced role means his potential absence may have less tactical impact, but it would still limit Mikel Arteta’s options for squad rotation.

Clean slate for key players

Arsenal will be relieved that several key players avoided bookings in Lisbon, clearing their disciplinary records ahead of the quarter-final conclusion. Declan Rice, who had been at risk, escaped caution in the first leg.

Riccardo Calafiori, Gabriel, Myles Lewis-Skelly, Noni Madueke, Gabriel Martinelli, William Saliba, Ben White, and match-winner Kai Havertz all entered the tie with one booking but avoided further punishment during the victory.

Arsenal’s slender advantage puts them in pole position to reach their first Champions League semi-final since 2009, but Arteta will need to balance his tactical approach with the disciplinary concerns surrounding his midfield options when Sporting visit north London next week.
