Two Arsenal stars risk Champions League ban ahead of crucial Sporting clash

Arsenal face a delicate balancing act in Wednesday’s Champions League quarter-final second leg against Sporting, with two key midfielders walking a disciplinary tightrope that could see them miss a potential semi-final.
Martin Zubimendi and Christian Norgaard are both one yellow card away from suspension, meaning any booking against Sporting would rule them out of the first leg of the semi-final should Arsenal progress.

According to the Evening Standard, UEFA regulations state that all yellow cards expire on completion of the quarter-finals, making Wednesday’s clash particularly precarious for the pair.
Zubimendi’s suspension history
The Spanish midfielder has already served a one-game suspension this season after picking up bookings in each of Arsenal’s first three league phase games. He was then cautioned again in the first leg of the Gunners’ round-of-16 tie against Bayer Leverkusen.
UEFA’s disciplinary rules stipulate that players face suspension after three cautions, with further suspensions following any subsequent odd-numbered caution. This puts Zubimendi in immediate danger of missing crucial Champions League action.
Norgaard’s precarious position
While the Danish midfielder has been a bit-part player this season and didn’t feature in the first leg against Sporting, he remains at risk after collecting bookings during the league phase games against Slavia Prague and Club Brugge.
Mikel Arteta will need to carefully consider his tactical approach, particularly if either player features prominently in his plans for the second leg at the Emirates.
The news isn’t entirely negative for Arsenal’s disciplinary record. Declan Rice avoided a booking in the first leg against Sporting, escaping potential punishment. A host of other players including Riccardo Calafiori, Gabriel, Myles Lewis-Skelly, Gabriel Martinelli, William Saliba, Ben White, and Kai Havertz also avoided cautions in Portugal.
Arsenal hold a slender advantage heading into Wednesday’s clash after Havertz’s late winner in Lisbon. The victory provided a crucial morale boost following successive defeats to Manchester City and Southampton.
The Gunners are among the favourites to lift the Champions League this season, with a potential semi-final against either Barcelona or Atletico Madrid awaiting should they navigate past Sporting. However, Arteta will be acutely aware that managing his squad’s disciplinary record could prove just as important as tactical preparations for the crucial second leg.
