Championship mentality crucial
Speaking to Football London, Gyokeres emphasised the importance of maintaining focus throughout a gruelling campaign.
“You have to be so focused every game and take every game as seriously as you can, no matter who you play,” the 27-year-old explained. “All the points that you get count in the end.”
The former Sporting man, who won back-to-back Portuguese titles before his Emirates move, stressed the need to balance intensity with enjoyment during the crucial final months of the season.
“Even now, when it’s April, there’s a lot of games still to play, we just have to focus on doing our job and to enjoy it. Not think too much about what can happen or how the end result is going to be.”
Experience throughout the squad
Arsenal made a concerted effort to add winning mentality to their squad last summer, bringing in trophy winners across multiple positions. Martin Zubimendi, Eberechi Eze, Piero Hincapie, Kepa Arrizabalaga and Noni Madueke all arrived with silverware to their names.
Gyokeres believes this blend of perspectives strengthens the collective approach. “Every player has different experiences through their careers and different feelings about the same situations,” he said. “I think it’s always important to come with a different mindset sometimes and to look at it in a different way.”
The striker also praised new defensive coach Gabriel Heinze’s impact since joining the backroom staff. “I think he brings a lot of good energy into the group. He has a good drive in him, and I think that spreads throughout the group.”
Handling pressure and nerves
With 17 goals across all competitions this season, six clear of Arsenal’s next highest scorer, Gyokeres has shouldered the goalscoring burden effectively. However, he offered a refreshing take on dealing with the inevitable pressure and nerves that come with a title race.
“I think if you feel nerves, I think it means that it matters for you,” he stated. “I think it’s not bad if you take it in the right way and you put that energy in the right direction.”
The Swedish international’s mature approach to handling expectations aligns with Mikel Arteta’s vision for his number nine, with the manager having previously emphasised the need for mental strength in the position.
Arsenal’s combination of experienced winners and developing talent under Arteta’s guidance appears to be creating the foundation for a sustained title challenge across multiple competitions this season.
