Why Arsenal Teenager Misses Big FA Cup Tie Today

Arsenal will be without promising teenager Myles Lewis-Skelly for today’s FA Cup fifth round clash against Mansfield Town, in what represents another setback in what has already been a difficult season for the 19-year-old defender.
The left-back was expected to start against the League One side as Mikel Arteta looks to rotate his squad following Wednesday night’s Premier League victory over Brighton. However, Lewis-Skelly has been ruled out due to suspension after accumulating two yellow cards in the competition.
FA Cup Rules Catch Out Young Gun
According to the Evening Standard, Lewis-Skelly picked up bookings in both our victories over Portsmouth and Wigan Athletic in earlier rounds. Under FA Cup regulations, any player who receives two yellow cards up to and including the quarter-finals automatically serves a one-match ban.

It’s a particularly frustrating blow for Lewis-Skelly, who was almost certain to feature from the start against Mansfield. Cup competitions have become his primary route to first-team football this season, having played the full 90 minutes in both previous FA Cup ties.
Limited Opportunities This Season
The suspension comes during what has been an underwhelming campaign for the teenager, who appeared to have a bright future ahead of him after being a regular fixture in Arteta’s plans last season. This term, however, Lewis-Skelly has managed just one Premier League start, seemingly having lost the manager’s trust.
His lack of regular minutes is now impacting his international prospects. England manager Thomas Tuchel made it clear in November that Lewis-Skelly needs more game time to force his way back into the Three Lions setup for this summer’s World Cup.
“Myles simply needs more starts, more minutes,” Tuchel explained after leaving the Arsenal man out of his squad.
Ben White and Christian Norgaard are the only other Arsenal players to have been cautioned in the FA Cup this season, meaning they’re also walking a disciplinary tightrope ahead of a potential quarter-final.
Crucial Period for Lewis-Skelly
With time running out in the season, Lewis-Skelly’s opportunities to impress Arteta and force his way back into regular contention are becoming increasingly scarce. Missing today’s tie against lower-league opposition – exactly the type of fixture where he might have been able to build confidence and momentum – feels like another missed opportunity.
Can Lewis-Skelly turn his season around and reclaim his place in our first-team plans, or has this campaign already slipped away from the promising young defender?
