Xavi Reveals He Told Barcelona to Sign £60m Arsenal Star

Former Barcelona manager Xavi has revealed he specifically requested the club to sign Arsenal midfielder Martin Zubimendi as Sergio Busquets’ replacement during his time at the Camp Nou.
The Spanish midfielder eventually joined the Gunners for £60 million last summer after Barcelona failed to pursue the deal for financial reasons. Zubimendi has since become a key player for Arsenal, making 40 appearances across all competitions in an impressive debut season.
Xavi’s Transfer Frustrations
In an explosive interview with La Vanguardia, Xavi lifted the lid on his difficulties at Barcelona, particularly regarding transfer policy. The former midfielder expressed frustration over the club’s inability to meet his expectations in the transfer market.

“Sergio Busquets was leaving so I asked them to sign Zubimendi and they told me no for financial reasons,”
Xavi explained, highlighting one of several disappointments during his tenure.
The 46-year-old admitted his expectations of Barcelona decreased over time, contrasting his first summer when the club listened to his transfer demands with later windows where financial constraints limited their ambitions.
Arsenal’s Smart Business
While Barcelona hesitated, Arsenal moved decisively to secure Zubimendi’s signature. The Spain international had been linked with several top clubs, including Liverpool who appeared close to signing him in 2024, and Real Madrid under Xabi Alonso.
The midfielder’s arrival at the Emirates has proven inspired, with Arsenal currently sitting at the top of the Premier League and competing on all four fronts. Zubimendi has seamlessly integrated into Mikel Arteta’s system, providing the midfield stability the club had been seeking.
Xavi’s revelation underscores how transfer decisions can have long-lasting consequences. Barcelona’s financial constraints prevented them from securing a player they clearly identified as crucial, while Arsenal’s willingness to invest has been rewarded with a midfielder who has enhanced their title credentials.
The former Barcelona boss also revealed other frustrations during his tenure, including the departure of key staff members and missed opportunities to re-sign Lionel Messi. These revelations provide insight into the internal struggles that ultimately led to his departure from the Catalan giants.
Zubimendi’s success at Arsenal will likely serve as a reminder to Barcelona of what might have been, as the Gunners continue their pursuit of silverware with their Spanish maestro pulling the strings in midfield.
