Former Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez has revealed he specifically requested the club to sign Martin Zubimendi during his tenure, viewing the midfielder as the perfect replacement for departing legend Sergio Busquets.
Busquets left Barcelona in 2023 after a distinguished career that saw him establish himself as one of the finest midfielders of his generation. His departure created a significant void in the squad, with Xavi identifying Zubimendi, then at Real Sociedad, as the ideal successor.

Financial constraints blocked move
According to the Metro, Xavi has now disclosed the frustration he felt when Barcelona’s hierarchy rejected his transfer request due to financial limitations. The former midfielder explained the internal challenges he faced during his time at the Camp Nou.
“Sergio Busquets was leaving so I asked them to sign Zubimendi and they told me no for financial reasons,” Xavi said. “Then Jordi Cruyff left because of the contempt they showed him – I mean, Cruyff’s son. They, who carry the banner of Cruyffism… I told him, ‘What are you saying? We just won the league’, and a month and a half later, they let Mateu Alemany go as a director.”
These comments highlight the broader instability behind the scenes at Barcelona during Xavi’s managerial reign, with key figures departing despite the team’s success on the pitch.
Zubimendi’s Arsenal success
The Spanish midfielder remained at Real Sociedad for two additional seasons before eventually securing his move to Arsenal. His development has continued in north London, where he has become an integral part of the Gunners’ squad.
Zubimendi’s performances could prove crucial as Arsenal pursue major silverware, including a potential Premier League title. His technical ability and tactical intelligence made him one of Europe’s most sought-after midfielders during his time in San Sebastian.
Liverpool and Real Madrid were also linked with moves for the player, underlining the widespread interest in his services. His continued development at Arsenal may serve as a reminder to clubs like Barcelona of what they missed out on when financial constraints prevented them from making their move.
The revelation provides insight into the transfer market dynamics that ultimately led to Zubimendi’s arrival in the Premier League, where he continues to demonstrate the qualities that made him such an attractive proposition for Europe’s elite clubs.
