Viktor Gyökeres delivered one of his most complete performances in an Arsenal shirt at the weekend, scoring twice and providing an assist in the Gunners’ commanding 3-0 victory over Fulham at the Emirates Stadium.
The Swedish striker’s double took him to 21 goals in all competitions for his debut season – a tally that places him in exclusive company at the club.

Gyökeres opened the scoring with a close-range finish after excellent work from Bukayo Saka down the right flank, marking his 20th goal of the campaign. A well-taken header just before half-time effectively sealed the result and demonstrated the predatory instincts that convinced Arsenal to spend £55m on his services last summer.
Historic first-season tally
The 21-goal haul makes Gyökeres just the third player in the Premier League era to reach 20 goals in his debut season for Arsenal. Only Alexis Sánchez in 2014-15 (25 goals) and Thierry Henry in 1999-2000 (26 goals) have been more prolific in their first campaigns.
Remarkably, across Arsenal’s entire history, Gyökeres becomes only the 13th player ever to achieve this milestone. Even Robin van Persie, one of the club’s most deadly finishers in recent memory, managed just nine goals in his debut 2004-05 season.
The statistics become even more impressive when viewed in a European context. Since the start of 2026, Gyökeres has scored 14 goals in all competitions – more than any other Premier League player. Across Europe’s top five leagues, only Harry Kane (24), Vinicius Junior (16) and Lamine Yamal (15) have found the net more frequently this calendar year.
Answering the critics
The striker’s form represents a significant turnaround from a challenging start to his Arsenal career. After scoring just three times in his first 11 competitive appearances, followed by another drought between late November and early January that yielded only one goal in 10 games, questions were raised about his ability to deliver the goals needed for a title challenge.
According to Opta Analyst, critics have also pointed to his penalty record, with three of his 14 Premier League goals coming from the spot. However, this 21.4% penalty rate compares favourably to other top strikers, while his 27 consecutive successful penalty conversions demonstrate reliability in high-pressure moments.
Beyond the goals, Gyökeres’ movement and link-up play against Fulham showcased the complete striker Arsenal believed they were signing. His powerful runs behind the defence and sharp movement into channels create space for teammates while his finishing provides the clinical edge.
With Arsenal holding a six-point lead at the Premier League summit and still competing in the Champions League, Gyökeres’ goal return in the final three league games could prove decisive in determining where both trophies end up this season.
