Agent’s Comments Fuel £70m Arsenal Transfer Links

Arsenal have received a significant boost in their pursuit of Sandro Tonali after the midfielder’s agent suggested Newcastle United is merely a stepping stone in his career trajectory.

The Italian international has established himself as a crucial player for Newcastle since his £70 million move from AC Milan in 2023, becoming a cornerstone of Eddie Howe’s midfield setup.

Tonali was linked with a shock deadline day switch to Arsenal during the January transfer window, though his representative Giuseppe Riso initially dismissed any contact between the clubs. “We never had any conversation with Arsenal,” Riso stated at the time.

Agent Hints at Bigger Move

However, Riso’s latest comments have reignited speculation about the 25-year-old’s future. According to Chronicle Live, Newcastle officials are frustrated with the agent’s recent statements regarding Tonali’s ambitions.

Despite the midfielder being contracted until 2028, Riso has openly discussed Newcastle as a development platform for bigger opportunities. “The deal came about because a club like Newcastle with unlimited financial resources had decided to invest in Sandro,” he explained. “We considered the idea of having the player play in a higher-level league.”

The agent was even more explicit about future possibilities involving Arsenal and Manchester City: “That was the goal from the moment he went to England – to try to make him a star player. I think he’s the Italian footballer with one of the highest values in the world.”

World Cup Factor

Riso highlighted the 2026 World Cup as a potential catalyst for any major move. “If he shines at the World Cup, will City or Arsenal be hot on his heels? I don’t know, but it’s very likely,” he stated. “Everyone is waiting for the World Cup; then a thousand scenarios will unfold, but it all kicks off after the World Cup.”

The comments represent a stark contrast to his January position when he insisted there was “absolutely nothing” to Arsenal speculation and that Newcastle “were never gonna let Tonali leave.”

Arsenal’s interest in the versatile midfielder makes tactical sense given his ability to operate in multiple roles across the midfield. His experience in Serie A and the Premier League, combined with his age profile, aligns with the club’s recruitment strategy of targeting established players entering their prime years.

With Newcastle reportedly irritated by their player’s agent publicly discussing potential exits, the summer transfer window could present Arsenal with an opportunity to test the Magpies’ resolve regarding one of their key assets.
