The father of Arsenal’s record-breaking teenager Max Dowman has launched a blistering public attack on a former coach who tried to claim credit for his son’s historic achievement.

Robert Dowman issued a furious rant on social media after Temisan Williams, a former Arsenal Under-12s assistant coach, appeared on talkSPORT to discuss the 16-year-old’s development following his milestone Premier League goal.

Max Dowman became the youngest goalscorer in Premier League history during Arsenal’s 2-0 win over Everton, breaking James Vaughan’s long-standing record. The achievement brought intense media scrutiny to the teenager’s upbringing and early coaching.

Williams used his radio appearance to discuss Dowman’s “super strength” in ball carrying and his progression at the academy. However, this did not sit well with the player’s family.

Father hits back at ‘self-promotion’

Robert Dowman took to X to express his anger at Williams’ comments. “Listening to this guy Temisan Williams claiming he was any part of Max’s journey is a really sad piece of attempted self-promotion,” he wrote.

According to Football London, the father accused Williams of ignoring previous requests to stop speaking about his son publicly. He dismissed the coach’s actual involvement, stating: “I remember him putting the cones out at training a few times, but that’s about it.”

Robert Dowman emphasized that while the family is grateful to many “fabulous coaches,” Williams is “certainly not one of them.”

Real credit given to academy scout

The father used the opportunity to highlight who he believes actually deserves recognition for his son’s rise. He praised Johnny Knight, the Arsenal scout who spotted Max at age four, calling him the “best scout in the business” and the person truly responsible for the player’s journey.

Williams defended his radio comments by clarifying he was only a “small part of his journey” as an assistant coach who observed the youngster’s progression over a two-year period at the academy.

Following the social media backlash, Williams issued a public apology. He confirmed he had spoken directly with the family and stated: “Going forward, I will not be discussing Max Dowman’s development.” He concluded by wishing the family “nothing but continued success.”

The controversy has overshadowed what should have been a purely celebratory moment for the Arsenal academy. Dowman’s record-breaking achievement represents a significant milestone for the club’s youth development, highlighting the pathway from academy to first team that Arsenal has worked to establish under Mikel Arteta.
