Arsenal face Real Madrid dilemma over injury-prone £42m defender

Arsenal could face a significant transfer decision this summer as Real Madrid prepare to target Riccardo Calafiori, with Jose Mourinho reportedly keen on the injury-hit defender.

According to football.london, the potential incoming Real Madrid manager views the Italian as the final piece of his defensive rebuild at the Santiago Bernabeu. Mourinho has already moved aggressively to strengthen his backline, with Denzel Dumfries and Ibrahima Konate expected to join Los Blancos.

The 24-year-old left-back would complete Mourinho’s defensive overhaul, but Arsenal currently have no intention of selling the defender. Calafiori has three years remaining on his contract, leaving the club under no pressure to negotiate.

Injury concerns complicate situation

However, the Italian’s persistent fitness issues could influence any potential decision. Since arriving at Emirates Stadium in 2024, Calafiori has missed 44 matchday squads for club and country due to injury across nine separate problems.

Most recently, Arteta confirmed that the defender suffered an issue during the week leading up to the Champions League final, preventing him from both starting and coming off the bench against Crystal Palace. When explaining his lineup choices, Arteta revealed: “With Richy, we’ve had certain issues with him during the week as well, so the others are starting.”

The manager’s frustration with Calafiori’s availability has been evident throughout the season, with supporters also expressing concern over the defender’s injury record.

Financial considerations

While Arsenal’s primary response would be to retain the highly-rated defender, a substantial offer from Real Madrid might not be completely dismissed. The club already have Piero Hincapie in their squad and maintain interest in both Nathaniel Brown and Castello Lukeba as defensive options.

Under the new Squad Cost Ratio rules, Arsenal have room to spend but could create additional financial flexibility by moving on players. A significant fee for Calafiori would provide substantial funds for other targets during what promises to be an ambitious transfer window for Arteta’s side.

The situation presents a genuine dilemma for the Premier League champions. While Calafiori’s talent is undeniable, his injury record raises questions about long-term reliability in a squad aiming to compete on multiple fronts next season.
